Hi guys, was hoping someone with some knowledge of the region could help shed some light on the penalty points (black points) in the UAE. I have checked the usual ministry sites but there isn’t a clear explanation.

I gather the upper limit is 24 but do the points reset each year?

If you pick up a fine and points how comes you can’t settle the fine electronically, is this because you need to settle when re-registering the car every year?

I also saw a comment about a confiscation period associated with points, is this correct?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, (as you can probably gather have earned myself a few... not a great start to the week!).
TIA

Looks like no-one's biting, so I might give it a try.

Don't really know definitive answers for all your questions but I know that you can't settle points related misdemeanours online as the police require you to present your licence in person at RTA (that way they can confirm who was driving at the time, rather than put the points on the owner's licence).

Also I think impounding of the vehicle is related to a specific offence, rather than the total points. So jumping a light is an impoundable offence but a speeding ticket is not (usually!).

Your points stay on for 1 year only from the date of you paying the fine till the following year.

Only found this out as we had an event on Friday with a police escort and they were telling everyone how the new system works wink

Points stay on for 1 year - correct.

If you cannot pay the fine on the Dubai Police website it might be telling you that you have to appear at the police station to have the car do a little jail time..... If you were doing more than 80kph over the speed limit then you will be looking at 30 days.

Ah, that was you lot was it? We got stuck in the tailback following you all on SZR...
Why did you need a police escort, by the way?

Thanks for the replies guys... so from firsthand experience the points last for 12 months from the date of payment (as previously mentioned), if you get 24 points in a 12 month period you lose your license for 3 months. You can pay to not have your can impounded at 100AED per day of the proposed confiscation period, (e.g. 3,000 AED + the fine)...
... an aside but worth knowing, when renewing your license plate you need at least 13 months on the policy cover so no point renewing your insurance then rocking up a couple of weeks later to sort the plate out!

Due to the amount of cars and bikes we had.

Its a good idea as when we got to cetain busy junctions and one of the roundabouts at the end of Emirates road they closed them to let us through.

sorry about the thread hijack!
Here some of the pics.

Hi Rob - just to leap back On Topic...a colleague found a web site describing the penalties for various traffic offenses, cos we were confused about my having speeding fines, but no points. The following link details the fines, points and vehicle impounding for the various offenses. It seems that you have to have exceeded the limit by more than 50kph to get any points! smile
