Re-Mapping a S/C Car?
Discussion
Ive never had a SC car before always turbo ones and no absolutely nothing about re-mapping the cars!
My plan is to fit new manifolds (probably without cats) and also a new air filter of some sorts and hopefully an intercooler system for the charger.
Am I best off taking the car once the mods are done to get it re-mapped to take advantage of the mods? On the turbo'd cars ive had the re-maps have always altered the boost levels, I take it the charger boost can only be altered with a new pulley being fitted?
Thanks in advance for any help.

The most sensible, cost effective route is to carry out all modifications, and then have the car mapped to suit.
Obviously if the mods are extensive...drive very sensibly until full mapping has been carried out

Im not planning extensive mods on it, the cars almost quick enough for me now, just a touch more and will be very happy!
Problem is deciding what to do to get that little bit extra and keeping everything reliable.

Yes the boost can be increased by using a smaller S/C pulley, or a larger drive pulley but I have no idea how yours is set up. Remember if you free up the exhaust flow that the boost could actually drop whilst still flowing the same amount of air, so same HP with less boost.TerryS said:

If I change the manifolds (headers!) take the cats out, alter the heads and fit a better air filter so theirfore increasing the airflow through the engine the supercharger wont run as much boost and theirfore end up with the same amount of power before I started?
I thought with the pulley running say 6psi it would always run that regardless?
Set up wise its a VXR500 non intercooled with an aftermarket exhaust of some sorts but standard manifolds/airfilter.
Ultimately whats my mod path, I would like to do the manifolds, take the cats out and fit a different/better air filter system and also intercool the supercharger but if im not going to get any extra power theirs not much point! If the above are changed can the car be re-mapped to take advantage of those mods without changing the pulley to get the power back up or would that have to be changed at the same time?
Thanks again!

By improving air flow through the engine your air packer will be able to push air into it more easily ie less boost. Imagine boost as being a measure of resistance. So' you'll see power happening quicker and lower down the rev range. It'll still be limited by the revs and pulleys though and boost may show as less on the guage even though your getting lots of airflow.

If you do headers and intercooler, its just likely your power output will be more consistent rather than much max bhp gain. Though Id suggest that the headers would help more than the intercooler in winter and vica versa in summer. If I change the manifolds (headers!) take the cats out, alter the heads and fit a better air filter so theirfore increasing the airflow through the engine the supercharger wont run as much boost and theirfore end up with the same amount of power before I started?

PSI is nothing to do with power output. PSI is simply a measurement of restriction. Try blowing through a straw with the end blocked off. The pressure in the straw is your PSI. Ultimately its the amount of air in the cylinder that counts not the PSI you are trying to ram the air up against a closed valve with. You will make more power with less restriction at a lower PSI. The blower will be moving the same volume of air, but as a bonus it will be cooler... remember PV=nRT?
If you are running the stock exahust manifold then go with a 1.75 or 1.875 primary header.
As usual start with your power requirements and go from there. How much more power do you want? A mild cam along with the headers and intercooler will really make things nice. A cam only install on a NA setup should give you 20% or so more power so on FI you should expect at least that.
Jez never installed a cam in engine, so sadly missed out on the benefits before dumping it. Madmonkey did it for him.
Thanks for explaining the above, as say never had SC before just turbo cars which have a fair bit of experience with tuning. When I change the air filter and do the manifolds am I best taking it to get re-mapped to take advantage of them or will the engine just recognise the better air flow on its own and do it itself?
My aims are basically to use the std 112 charger, have not intentions of altering any of the bottom end of the engine at all and would rather leave the heads/cam till the earliest of next year. Would like to get the most out of the engine thats possible but whilst keeping it reliable for the 3k miles a year or so the car will do.

Same principle applies to turbo vehicles

Same principal, how they work is rather different as in tuning is pretty much all electronic on the turbos for boost etc where its mechanical for the chargers, hence the questions about re-mapping!
Going off the above example if I got a 12psi pulley for the charger (not sure if possible that high on the 112?) however improved air flow alot on the engine it wouldnt be putting as much stress on the charger or engine as the boost pressure would actually be less due to the improved air flow?

Actually the most sensible is probably to leave the car as stock and walk away from this website never to return again with your wallet intact

if you want to keep it legal and mot'able keep the cats, you wont be losing any power with them
Ah but will I get a better noise without them?! Can easily get them re-fitted and work in a garage with an MOT station if you get what im saying.stigmundfreud said:

I get what you are saying, you work in a Polish MOT station
