Had the odd 'funny' feel in the clutch pedal recently, and a few drips leaking on the garage floor - today had one moment when it would'nt select a gear for about 5 seconds.
Headed for home feeling normal again, but a pool of fluid soon formed in the garage under the gearbox area.
I assume the slave cylinder has let go, and due mainly to my location, I'll probably do this myself - what advice/tips can anyone offer - is it worth just doing the seals? Is there a 'how to' anywhere?
I had the gearbox out last year so know a bit under there, but apprecitae anyones experiences...

There's a garage in Knockentiber that's going to do mine when I supply him the part, 01563 539802, his name is Sandy Wallace, he's had tvr's there before. Most recently a 350T
When I spoke with him he said it wouldn't be a problem for him, although it will be a month or so before I am back there.

hope it helps

regards,

James.

Thanks James - but I'm past the point of no return now.

Ready to drop the gearbox and bellhouse tomorrow - I can manage most stuff and got a very good mechanic brother for the tricky bits.

Also those very nice chaps at Greenstar will always help out over the phone when needed, so we shouldn't be stuck - I'll check out the chap in Knockentiber for the future though!

Bit disappointed with the response on here I have to say...

Are you replacing the whole slave? I've had mixed opinions, the mechanic I use here says just replace the O ring and I must say he's looked after the car for 7 years, and also my previous TVR'S, others have said replace the complete slave unit. My problem is I'm in Jersey, and my car is in Ayrshire at present I want to get it sorted when I come up in July.

Kind regards,

I'm going to take it out and inspect it for scoring, etc.

Even so, taking expert advice, it seems that the sensible way to go is to upgrade the whole slave while its off to a better maufactured new unit, or I could well end up with the same arse job in the not too distant future!

Off to plunder the fund again then....smash

Please keep me posted, Sandy at Knockentiber recommended that I replace the whole unit as something could be scoring the seal. Have been in a hotel for the last few nights, sons wedding, 2 weeks time it's the daughters graduation, my fund is now gone, I'll be busking in Kilmarnock's King St, to get mine repaired.

Kind regards,

James

WHEN I CHECKED THE SEALS IN MY SLAVE I THOUGHT THE TOLERANCES WERE
VERY TIGHT ESPECIALY WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE WORKING PRESURE NEEDED
SO I REMOVED THE O RINGS,AND WENT TO A LOCAL STOCKIST FOR A SLIGHTLY BETTER
SIZE WHICH COST £1.50 EACH! WHICH SAVED TIME AND OF COURSE MONEY

Well, having stripped everthing out the fault was dead obviously a very perished seal round the outside of the piston.

Everything else looks absolutely sound with no marking or scoring and operates freely, so I'm just going to fit a new seal kit and re-new the bearing and hopefully that will do the job.

This is also backed up with the fact that the clutch operated perfectly up to when it went - the fingers also look in very good nick too, so with a bit of luck I might not need to go near this again for a while...(touches wood!)

Still, at least if I do, I'll know what I'm in for now - one PITA job, but quite do-able if you've plenty of time and can spanner a bit, and it helps keep the car on sensible budget!

Oh for a pit or ramps though....

Corrrrrr i'd love a pit...
just about to take box out for the 2nd time in 2 days as found a pack of washers in the bottom of the packaging box for the new clutch i have just fitted. these washers will cause drag on the clutch if missing which you would expect to see from a leaking slave, so now gonna fit new oring on slave while box is out as well
Doh and double Doh.......
