Quite frequently now, my 40D will throw a CF Error on startup. Interestingly the cards also give a "You need to format this card" when plugging them into the laptop. This is happening with more than one card. Dodgy cards (all SanDisk Extreme III) or dodgy body do you think?

Have the cards been formatted in camera?
My CF threw a real wobbly once it had some photos on it (probably half full) and hadn't been formatted in camera.
Once I did that, no further problems. smile

Yes they've been formatted in-camera. I tend to alternate between 2 cards - I think I will try a less-used one and see what happens.

Oddly, opening and closing the CF card door tends to sort it, hence my concern that the body has a fault.

Opening and closing the CF door halted the error I had when the card was incorrectly formatted as well.
May well be worth formatting again just to see if that solves it?

I get a similar problem with my D200. Every now and then, it will throw a "CHR" error when writing an image. Switching off and back on fixes the problem with the loss of one image, but it's irritating. It happens with both Sandisk Extreme III 4Gb cards, but not (so far) with a Kingston 4Gb card. As with the OP, I always format in camera.
