A couple of folk at my work are currently doing community service and i must say from there stories it is a bit of a waste of time.

The first is doing community service for taking a huge knife to the chip shop. His community service appears to consist of driving around in a transit mini bus with a load of scum and buying beer and thats it.

The second is doing his community service for assault. His community service is working at a place for young offenders. Exactly whose good idea it was to get offenders to work at young offenders place must be a genius

So can we not just please get rid of community service as it just seems to be a waste of time and money.

With pink jumpsuits and hard labour laying tarmac on runways whilst the planes land for example, it could be improved.

A bit generous with jumpsuits.

Pants is all that is needed, they will be working that hard they wont get cold.

There are lots of drainage ditches that could be cleaned out, lots of pot holes to be filled in, lots of grass and hedges to be cut, lots of grafitti to be cleaned and so on and so forth.

We should have the cleanest, best painted country in the world, with every OAP's garden dug, planted and watered by people doing time.

Make the fkers work for their dinner. Don't want to work and just sit in your cell all day? Bread and water, for as long as you want it.

Nice idea BUT a local cathedral used to get help from the community service folk and they just caused absolute mayhem. Stealing stuff, wrecking stuff and generally be a pain in the ass.

Community service just doesn't work

You simply don't have the requisite imagine. Too much carrot, not enough stick in this world. SO, a person is employed to watch the Community Service scum undertaking their duties. Anyone determined to be slacking (a small head cam could be used to record evidence for a Tribunal for example to ensure impartiality) will then face 10 lashes in the town square on the Saturday afternoon. (10 lashes for each day during the week they were slack)

It would certanly bring a new terror to old age.

Any threatening behaviour could be easily dealt with at a local level.shoot

scumbags parents should join the party.....if people are going to have kids and fail as parents they should share the punishment for the crimes of their offspring i think...

I've done community service three times and found that it does work.

I got a lot from it and so did members of the community who I "worked for".

It obviously wasn't a deterrent but neither was prison.

CS can be very hard work but as with anything you only get out what you put in.

Spot the flaw in that argument.

That was my first thought as well.

However, IF it was dealt with by floggings for those who slack or are offensive/abusive to others (either on the community service or MoP) I wonder if it would be more effective.

A couple of friends have done community service. In both cases they worked in a local charity shop.

Both found it quite rewarding and gave something back to the community, neither are kind of people who're likely to reoffend, though.

In the the Cook Islands they operate an good system - for about £10 a day residents can hire prisoners (of which they only had about 7) to work for them, doing DIY, cleaning, gardening etc...

They should wear pink tutu's and a dog collar and be whipped by gimps....

Although i suspect George Michael would be found pissed at his car wheel parked outside a police station every Friday night.

I've had to do community service & your right to an extent that it does nothing for some but it did do something for me. I never want to spend that much time with chav scum ever again. They don't learn from it and know that they're unlikely to go to prison due to space problems and that their crime "in't that bad init mush chavvy bruvvah" so they breach all the time and act the tt in the van & to other chavs as they are all double hard bastid ganstás despite working in Tesco or on building sites.

One kid who looked about 10 but was 17, probably the most stupid animal I've ever encountered was dangerous to be near. Clearing some bushes where some kid got raped he just grabbed a load of brambles with his hand (no gloves) and tried to rip them out so got a fist full of barbs. The supervisor tried to gently and slowly take them out but this kid just started trying to rip them out himself so was left to it. Same kid hacked half way through a telegraph pole (we were chopping down trees etc) before the supervisor stopped him had to call the emergency people and stop work. Same kid threw a whole can of petrol on the fire we had going to burn the trees = a big mushroom cloud of fire.

Some PORG was there for burglary and felt it hilarious how he could be lifted into small open windows to go & open up the house so all the chavs could help themselves.

Also met my first & several other people who couldn't read or write yet had access to the same education that I did. For most of the people there it wasn't their first time either. Also all the work is done as slowly as possible, there's this one church I made a few visits to that we had to paint and was like the Golden Gate bridge. By the time you'd finished you had to start again.
