just got an 07 mcs. As this thread title suggests im surprised at how quick it is. I know its relatively light but im no stranger to fast, torquey cars and it feels far stronger than 180bhp to me. Is the consensus that bmw downplay the figures?

They feel quicker than they are because of the size, in the same way as a 106GTI feels more like 150bhp rather than 120bhp.

Still feels much faster than say the Clio 182 I had from new a few years ago..Wondered if the output was more like 200bhp in reality..

It's probably because the R56 Cooper S has 240 Nm torque compared to the Clio 182's 200 Nm, plus it's available from lower rev's in the Mini.

Get it dyno'd - then you'll know it's output smile

These dyno well above the claimed 175hp, most record at least 185hp.

As mentioned the broad spread of torque will also make the car feel faster than it is.

I was wondering what people think feels faster out of the Supercharged R53 or the Turbo R56?

Because the BHP is shown as more on the R56, but I guess this might make up for it being a slightly heavier car????

I think the general consensus is that the R56 feels a bit quicker when accelerating, but there's not much in it in terms of numbers. They both deliver the power in very different ways and it comes down to personal preference.

As an R53 owner, I think i'd miss the supercharge whine wink

Driven both. I like the wine of the supercharger but I would go with the fact the turbo is a littel bit quicker (mpg is a lot better).

I went for a late R53 over an early R56 because of the noise, the handling, the looks and how easy it was to tune. Clearly a matter of opinion but although the new car is better made I just felt it had lost some of the magic. The handling didn't seem as sharp, the noise was dull and it just looked a bit of a porker in comparison.

From an engine point of view the R56 feels like it has loads more grunt at low revs but it runs out of ideas around 5k rpm. Its also much harder to get extra power from the engine. A smaller pulley at £250 fitted is an instant 20hp on an R53. Some of the American guys are running turbo conversions with a reliable 400hp such is the strength of the block.

Most R53 owners complain about the mpg but I average 37mpg on 95ron and 38.5mpg on 99ron which isn't bad for a car of its type but nowhere near as good as they R56 guys manage. I'll still be tempted if they bring out a GP'd R56 though.

you obviously dont drive it hard enough! wink

I averaged 30.8mpg over 40,000 miles of mixed driving and with a heavier foot (as I had in the last year) would average 26mpg.

I thought it likely that they made typically more than 175 stock. From experience turbo charged cars are easy to tune. I know about the Works conversion but Ive read mixed reviews (re the R56) suggesting its very expensive for a modest gain.

Is there no popular (and recommended) tuner who can just remap the R56 at sensible cost (£3-400ish) or is Works the way to go?

He definitely isn't driving it hard enough!

In the wifes R56 MCS she gets around 36mpg over a tank. It's nearer 30 if I've had it for a few days though. Easily into the 40's on a mway run though.

56mph in 6th everywhere? I honestly can't get over 35mpg no matter how hard i try. Barely ever touching the loud pedal at all, still gets me 33mpg max frown

Whilst I haven't much long range experience in an R53, common opinion is that they are rather thirsty. So, point being is to see almost 40mpg is surprising and leads me to believe he has Miss Daisy in the back wink

Bah if you care about economy, get a Mini D tongue out

I get about 28 mpg in my R53 on my 250 mile per week commute, pretty crap for a small car, but a lot of fun wink

28 isn't bad really. I get less than that from my R26.

I didnt buy my Cooper S for economy but I am glad to get an average of 34mpg.

I used to know a guy in the police force who had a JCW Cooper S and he managed to get 38mpg out of it too.

These were both R53's.

80% A roads to work and back at 40mpg on the way there and 37mpg on the way back.
10% motorway at 38mpg
10% town at 33mpg

Looking at the instant readout the economy falls off a cliff going uphill or using more than half throttle. With a couple of choice mods its quite a torquey bugger now so unless i'm on a hoon the economy is pretty impressive.

Its actually gained 2mpg with the GP parts I fitted biggrin
