Anybody that does track days will be aware that there are noise limits, anybody that owns a decatted cerbera with sports pipes will be aware that they are insanely loud biggrin Hence my predicament.
In July we are heading to the Nurburgring and the dB limit there is 105dB i measured my car yesterday at 4000 rpm 118.5dB.... 'Well get a standard exhaust' may be the answer but i like my car and the noise it makes. 'Get trackday silencers' may be another answer but they hang out the back like a pair of reversing scud missiles and we are going over on a Tourist day where normal road law applies and as such the cans would be illegal. idea
So today i have been to my local Powerflow dealer again and had my tailpipes cut off
yikes and a sleeve welded in to them, now i can swap my ACT trackday cans or my nice polished 3" tails on and off in 2 minutes flat and they are not sticking out the back, making the car quite a lot quieter and usable on the Ring or any other track. Hes had to do a bit of cutting and welding so that they both line up but now i can have a subtle sedated cerbera for creeping up to the track barriers and unleash the hounds of hell on the way home! evil

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Nurburgring marshalls WILL NOT accept ACT silencers or any other type of silencers that stick out of the back. frown

Cats in, keep the revs low in and around the carpark is my advice. Sorry.

Edit: re-read your post.

Err, do you have pics of your set up?? you could be on to something there...

Looks good to me! How fussy are they? If the rule states that they cant stick out and yours dont then surely they will be fine? Though if the rules state no bolt on silencers then you might come stuck!

I thought so, the law i think states a 2 1/2" limit on tailpipes hanging out, thats what the marshalls will be looking out for.

Just remeasured with the cans on and got 98/99 dB, borderline for some trackdays but im sure itll be ok, definately ok for the 105dB at the Ring woohoo

ACT did a version of my system that had removable tailpipes that fitted trackday silencers on instead.

In fact - all the way back at the Brands trackday 3rd Sept 2007 someone had a similar system. Two bolts on each side to swap over:
Dunno who this was though, but I have the evidence.

I had to come up with a better solution to the push fit, after one flew off as I started a sprint at Goodwood, true to the laws of physics, I went one way the silencer went the other!

The first I knew about it was the marshall kicking the offending can at me once I'd completed the timed run, 'You've dropped something, I ain't touching it it's hot!' biggrin

Maybe I should have patented the design. smile

You can make/bodge some trackday silencers from bean cans, i had to do it for a friend and it worked. Simply open one end and discard, halfish open the other end and you have an adjustable flap ( mind your fingers!), then tin snip the open side so it can slide over the silencer tips, you can then also direct the sound away from the pit wall, you can then make a hearty meal from the beans/Boiled spuds! smile ETA you have to jubilee clip them on also!!

I thought the noise limit at the ring was lower than 105? Because of that
went for TVR Monsters internal TD silencer. Can't say how loud it is now
but its noticably quieter. Standard back box and decat was 107 at 4000rpm
before. Got on the ring last year no problems without extra silencing, but its
a long way to go and fail a noise test.

BTW when are you going, I'm there again with a few cars from up north Sunday 5th.

I'm shocking with names & faces - it's why I take photos biggrin

If I remember rightly you had exhaust type flanges on yours with just two bolts. I thought that was a great idea.

Hi Tim,

Just resurrecting this thread. Do you have DB readings from your system, and do you have cats/no cats

Some piccies would be good?
