Nationwide was previously free to use wherever the appropritate sign was displayed with no handling charges whatsoever to be made. I was going to join the bank simply for this reason alone. I have heard they no longer offer this service does anyone know why this is so? Are the charges that nationwide deducts now still more favourable than other banks?

I bank with HSBC currently but they've done a few things to annoy me and I dont feel that they should have my hard earned cash!

I think it's only on their Visa credit card that they are withdrawing the 'freeness'. It remains free on the debit card for cash withdrawals abroad.

Happy to stand corrected, but this was my understanding of the changes.

I thought so. I'll go to the bank next week to find out.

According to their website, only Visa transactions will have the Visa fee passed on, i.e. no Nationwide fee. And cash withdrawals using their Cash Card attract no fee whatsoever

Or is their website behind the news?

AFAIK they now charge a 1% loading outside of Europe, and 0% in Europe
Still better than 90% of the competition, but not number 1.

Unless I midread it, I got a mailing stating the removal of the free credit card service abroad, while the small print also alluded to the removal of the free debit card service.

I don't think they charge the fee, but now pass on the Visa fee for both credit and debit cards. Of course, the debit card fee might not be due to be initiated until later in the year.

I might, of course, be wrong, I think I threw the letter away.
