I went to Bruges once. I kinda got the impression that everything shuts at around 9:30pm.

Have a great time.

Alcoves, yes. It's kind of like nooks and crannies.

If you want nightclubs, I wouldn't go to Bruges, and I love the place. There may be some on the outskirts, but I haven't found any as yet. Mind ewe, I'm 50, so I'm not sure I'm exactly "nightclub" fodder, although I do still go to Rock City in Nottingham from time to time.

Old rockers never die, their air guitar just gets heavier.

This is a serious question, but why? I'm not being funny, but I spent four days there and didn't get the appeal. I'll happily admit that I'm in the minority, but I just missed the point of the place.

Cheers

Nightlife:
Bruges is not particularly famous for its nightlife in the usual understanding of the term. Without a clubbing scene, one might think that there is nothing to write about nightlife in Bruges. Except that its stunning historic centre looks at its best at night, when the most prominent monuments are skillfully lit up and the little cafes and bars located in the centuries old buildings put on slightly subdued lights creating an incredibly powerful ambiance one's imagination would most certainly associate with the Middle Ages. It is wonderful to feel almost teleported back to the years of the city's glory and soak the atmosphere. It is like a fairy-tale, indeed - if to quote one of the characters from the aforementioned motion picture. It is really hard to overstate the magic of Bruges.
No clubs by the look of things, but you could always look at the pretty lights

If you're visiting Bruges by car (and don't mind a short drive) there used to be a very good one called "Lamborgini" (appropriate eh?) on the road to Maldegem.

Small tip - if you ask for a nightclub you will probably be directed to an establishment with very willing young ladies. If you are looking for a UK type night club, ask for a "dancing".

Thanks all (apart from your quoting the sodding film wink)

Not really after anything special.. i had a feeling they would be very limited. Just somewhere open late with a bit of music i guess.

Any other suggesties?

We were there the other weekend, there are some very nice bars just off the centre square, and the Druids Lair Irish pub is excellent, they had a truly fantastic live band on too smile

Just DO NOT be tempted to have a kebab or similar from the same area, unless you like playing guess what animal this used to be hurl

I have looked into this before, when me and the wife went to Brugges. There ARE NO nightclubs in Bruges. There are wine bars, but no nightclubs.

Sorry, gotta cope with high strength Belgian lager in bars only... smile

I admit it is (as the film so graphically shows) a place you either love or hate. We go for a couple of days at a time, usually, and find it remarkably easy to "chill out" there. I've never felt threatened once, even the stag and hen trips seem to behave themselves. I generally hate towns and cities with a passion (Paris is no.1 on my never again list), but I just gelled with Bruges as soon as I'd parked the car at the hotel.

I was there three weekends ago with about 160 of my co-workers for a company weekend away, including a civic reception in the council building on the Burg; and a wonderful evening in the building at the base of the "stump". The younger (teens and 20's) ones generally found it too quiet, the older ones almost to a man (and woman) want to go back again. Copenhagen, where we went two years ago, didn't get the same response.

Brussels, however, got the thumbs down from everybody.

OK - A couple of years since I was there last, but I've been there a lot and there are a couple of surprisingly late bars, one of which was packed to the rafters with people, had loud music booming and girls dancing in the windows when last there!

First off try Eiermarkt - a small pedestrian place just off the Markt (main central square) - on the opposite side to the bell tower. Couple of bars there.

Then walk up Vlamingstraat (again, leading away from the Markt, opposite side to the bell tower) there is a nice underground bar there called the Curiosa - not very late opening though.

Turning right just off Vlamingstraat is a little square with a couple of bars in it - don't know the name as I couldn't have read any roadsigns the last time I was there (!) but the one tucked away in the corner is the late one. They may still have metal lightshades hanging on long cables above the bar - watch out for these if you're as tall as the local Belgies, as part of the later evening entertainment people like to swing them round in big circles so that everyone has to duck!

Enjoy!

+1 Got some good memories in the Irish pub, pretty nice grub as well.

No nightclubs, which is a shame really, but the bars are excellent!
