drivers mirror wont return after reversing

Which car? Normally it's just the passenger side mirror which dips I think.
You can normally stop it dipping either by moving the LH-RH adjustment selector switch, or by turning it off via a menu option, so if all else fails you could at least stop it dipping in the first place perhaps. Not ideal though.
Have you tried pulling the fuse for the mirrors in case there's a control module which will reset?

However I believe the OP is talking about a P38 in which both mirrors dip when you put it in reverse.
Mine did what you describe once but I disconnected the battery and left it for about ten min then reconnected and this seemed to sort it out, never happened again.
