I cannot believe the prices people are willing to pay for used bikes on ebay.

eg 2008 Lapierre Zesty 314 (dented) went for £1600. £300 squid more gets you a shiny new one.

2007 Orange 5 Pro went for £1850! Sunset are selling 2008 ones for £2050.

FFS.

It is madness !!
I saw an Orange p7 not get a single bid the other week, then it was relisted and went for many hundreds.
I bought a virtually new Trek 6700slr 3 yrs ago from ebay for £400. That was a good price. I reckon I could get MORE now for it even though it is well used (and well maintained mind you).

Prices of retro stuff seems to be all over the place - a '92 Kona Hahanna (bottom of the range, about £250 new 17yrs ago!) went for just shy of £90 the other day.. daft..

yeah, but the real question is "did the sale take place ?" When I see prices that are way over sensible then I just take it that either someone is bidding up the price for the seller, or they're just taking the p1$$ and messing the seller about.

I know honest folks who have "sold" things several times before someone actually stumps up the cash, and although you can cancel bids you don't like it's hard to do in practice with last minute bids.

These days I hardly use Ebay at all but when I do it tends to be from established bike shops who are using it to sell off their old stock. They are usually the fairest on postage & pricing as well.

You're not wrong. I've seen a few items go for a high price, only to re-appear a few weeks later. The "sale" would have been to a mate probably.

To be fair I think the price of bikes and bike parts in general have sky rocketed in the last 6 months and its not just ebay.
Its not just prices as well, Im sure there isnt as much choice of decent stuff on ebay anymore. Ive been looking for some carbon bars and seatpost for my new bike, and havent been successful yet. Nothing of interest, and anything that is goes for about £50 when I could get new for a few quid more. 2 years ago I bought almost new perfect condition bars (FSA downhill for me and XC for her) and seatposts for mine and the other halfs bikes for £20 a piece.

I agree. I sold a 6 month old Genesis Day 01 on ebay last year (£450 new) and got £400 for it. There were similar new ones in the sale cheaper than the one I sold. Not that im complaining.

I think we've all got a lot to thank ebay for.

It creates a market for used goods which means we can then fund other purchases. I wouldn't have been able to afford a new high end bike every couple of years if ebay didn't exist to sell them on.

Too true. But why DO people pay so much for used bikes which have probably had a hammering?

retro stuff goes for loads because there are people trying to source the parts and bikes that first got them hooked on the sport. once they have paid >£3000 for the latest santa cruz or whatever, £100 on an old kona frame seems like nothing.....

as for lapierre's, stock coming into the UK is now almost zero so people will be prepared to pay whatever they can to get one...

My recent experience has been quite the opposite it seems, I've had to replace the cassette, chain, rear mech and chainrings recently on my Meta and after having a look around I actually managed to buy everything except the rear mech, brand new for less than half price on ebay. Good top of the range stuff aswell, not just cheap tat.

I also picked up a hardly used 2009 XO rear mech for £60, watched a pair of new Crossmax ST's go for £360 and a new Fiziki Gobi Ti saddle for £40. Bargainous stuff if you ask me.

Just seen a Rock Shok pump go for £29 when a new one can be had for much the same money.

Some of the prices, especially for the retro stuff is nuts. A friend actually makes his living buying and selling bike stuff on ebay and does pretty well.

Pretty handy for me too as I tend to get first refusal on loads of cheap stuff smile
