No matter how gently or economically I drive my F355 GTB, I cannot better 17mpg.

I find this baffling.

It's 3.5 V8 is not a huge engine, in comparison to 6.0L V12s from Mercedes etc.

65mph in 6th gear equates to 3000rpm.

It is a light car, with little frontal area.

The AM V8 Vantage that I had was larger, heavier, with a 4.3L V8, yet that managed 28mpg on steady runs. 2750rpm on the clock.

Why is the Aston so much more economical. Does not make sense.

Ouch!!

I think my old beemer 735 would've been turning under 2k at that speed and getting late 20s/early 30s. Sounds like it's geared more for fun as it indeed should be wink

Cheers,
Rob

I see nothing wrong with that sort of gearing. The Seicento and Panda are both geared in the same way. God it sucks to be 19, can't have anything fun yet...

355 is not exactly modern style engine.

Fuel efficiancy has improved a lot in last 10 years even in "Performance engines".

Oh poor you, my old rx7, with its little economical 1.3 engine used to get about 4mpg if driven enthusiastically hehe

If i drove like a saint i got about 14mpg.

I will have another one someday!

If you can afford a ferrari why do you care about how much fuel you have to pay for?

The ride in a Fezza should offset the negative effects of the crappy business name quite well, I think.

It is not a question of fuel costs, it is a question of why is the Ferrari so much more inefficient than the Aston, when the Aston was heavier, taller, larger engined?

Iv'e never seen anything like 28mph in mine. Never seen 20 come to think of it.

They're not that light... 1,444kg.

Totally different engine... the Aston won't rev to 8,750rpm and it doesn't have 8 individual throttle bodies! As you've already noticed, the 355 gearing is not exactly tall, which doesn't help fuel economy either. I think it's fair to say that fuel economy was bottom on the list of 355 design objectives.
