Is there a rubber gator under the leather one then?,
If so,then mine is shot too as i get some good heat through as well.
Mind you,at this time of year,it's kinda nice

Yes, Or at least mine does. Mine had split around the screws and was not fixed. I simply rotated it slightly made some new holes and problem solved. You still get some heat but not as much.

Would also be an idea to check and cleanup the lift reverse stopper. Mine had worn and could rotate once lifted and get stuck up. It would have been possible the select revers by mistake which could be interesting. Again all I needed to do was rotate its plastic stopper round and push my gear knob down further.

My S4 (MY 1993) got exactly the same "problem".
I have noticed that less heat comes in if I keep the doors and the roof closed. Since I have airconditioning in the car I have never felt this was a problem that should be fixed.

The coolant pipes run thru the centre tunnel. Its perfectly normal for it to get hot.

Presumably these coolant pipes (and chargecooler & oil cooler pipes on later cars),manage to dissipate a lot of heat while passing through the chassis tunnel.
I guess if the tunnel was lagged/insulated then it would have an adverse affect on the efficiency of the various cooling systems running through it?.

Or something like that...

The oil cooler pipework runs along side the chassis backbone and also the clutch pipe.
So you can imagine the temp of the pipes and all there is between the pipes and you is some thin fibreglass and a thin layer of foam, plus the trim in the car, so heat will not take much to get through that lot. And that is that!!
And yes there is ment to be a rubber gaitor underneath the leather gaitor, and ill tell you something that rubber gaitor is a small fortune so if you can salvage your old one then i would do that!

I had this heat issue when I purchaced mine. It was just the gaitor so I went to a local Hot rod shop and purchased and B&M Gatior that matched. It was less than $20.
