Having approached a roundabout and slowed down, I was just rolling along at about 5 mph out of gear when this strange clonking noise started. Lasted for a few seconds and quite noticeable but as soon as I got going again nothing more ?

Just one of those things or sound a bit odd ? Tried to replicate it later but nothing.

DIFF!

Did it sound like a lump hammer was flapping around under your car?

You can't replicate it once its freed itself - it will lock up again when hot and you've bee going straight ahead for a while.....
if it was anything else you would be aboe to replicate it. get some modifier from our sponsors^^^......

Odd. Not quite a lump hammer but a definate clonking noise repetatively for a short distance.

Surprised if it was hot as only be going for a 3-4 miles (maybe thats enough though ?)

It had the friction modifier added a year or two back ?

Oh,
The diff clonk you feel through the seat, it can vary in intensity though, mine was really bad, so much so the first time it happened I pulled over and phoned the very nice man at the AA. He couldn't replicate it, and suggested I take it to VX. A bit of research on here led to the diff solution.....
friction modifier doesn't last forever, but suprised its started clonking if done recently/low mileage.
Maybe its not the diff, but I'd pop some more modifier in before taking it to VX for them to charge you a fortune for the privelige of telling you its the diff......
