Last week i went up to London to get my dads Rolex fixed. While up in the shop, i saw a nice GMT Master 2. Question is, should i blow some of my savings (im quite young) on this absolute piece of sex?

Maybe i have come to the wrong section to ask such a silly silly question?

Strictly speaking, its like asking on punternet if you should take up the offer of a 18 year old, brand new to the game czech import who is insisting on the first five occasions being free!!!

The problem you have being a young'un is that everyone will accuse you of wearing a fake.

IMO, go for it! You'll have to wear it every day though and get over the idea that good watches should be worn for special occasions only and just wear them all the time!

People wear decent watches in warzones!

Might be the last time they get to wear them.

I try to take a practical approach to such dilemmas. Providing you maintain the box, innards, booklets and paperwork then, should you wish to sell the watch at any point, depreciation will be minimal. A Rolex is as good as cash. I have never sold a Rolex, or a Rolex part, for less than I paid for it. So you can sort of buy it and wear it for free. Secondly, the downside is that many people will think it's fake (unless you've got a posh car, which I assume you have).

Thirdly, if you do buy one, insist on at least a 15% discount off the RRP - you can get that (or a little better) from most ADs at the moment. Especially as Rolex are bumping up their UK prices every couple of months.

Do it. If like me, your savings interest rates have bottomed out over the last year then why not. Think of it as an investment, if you are desparate for money in the future you can always sell it again, you may even make a bit at the rate Rolex prices are rocketing at the moment, however thats not a good reason to buy it. If you like it that much, have the money and wont stop wanting it 'til it's on your wrist then go for it.

Thats what I told Mrs MoJo after buying a Sub and an Airking - the second being for her anyway, earlier in the year. However it is also costing me a ridiculously large amount of money for a holiday in August due to the fact I may have mentioned to her that the money is doing nothing in the bank anyway at the moment, so I may as well enjoy it now and replace anything spent over the next year or two !! bangheadhehe

I was thinking about the "yeah yeah its fake" crap. I don't think i would be fussed about it though. if someone really got on my knockers i could put it in their drink then take it out again while it still works!

My dad wears his all the time, even in the old bill!

Needless to say, we're going back up to collect his watch in the next few days, and i may come back with a heavier wrist but a lighter wallet biggrin

Thanks for all the comments so far, will keep you updated smile

Love to know which ad's are discounting to this level , i'm lucky enought to have two subs at the moment and bought two other rolex's in the last year which i sold on and regret now. but have failed to get a discount on any of them .

Even tried recently when offered a deep sea and sea dweller told no chance !

I got 14% off my Sub and around 10% off Mrs MoJo's Airking this year. One was an AD in Cardiff the other from Bath (I think - it was bought at Badminton Horse trials so cannot be sure of where they are based, but I'm sure it was Bath).
Crouch the Goldsmith and Martins Jewellers for the record.

Maybe the watches had been in stock a while, maybe it was because they were in stock and didn't have to be ordered or maybe, just maybe (beleive me this is a longshot) the ladies serving me liked my smile wink

eta If naming the shops is against PH posting rules feel free to remove 'mods' smile

I love my Sub; wouldn't swap it for quids. It's such a thrill to look at it, I just don't get tired.

It gets worn everyday except Sundays when it's the turn of my grandfather's JW Benson Safari. Mine cost me about £1850 a year or two ago, bought as new secondhand from dream-watches.co.uk - couldn't fault them.

Go on son, you won't regret it - just make sure it's covered by your home insurance.

You don't mention if it's new or pre-owned?

If it's pre-owned I would say yes, if it's new... then get a pre-owned one! Buying a new Rolex at list price and then selling it on will not make you any money unless it's pretty rare like a stainless steel Daytona or a Milgauss. But even the Milgauss watches are sitting in ADs at the moment, not much shifting.

The classic fake Rolex is a Submariner - a GMT II is faked (I know someone with an extremely good one), but not to the same level so you won't get so many of the comments. And if you do, who cares, just smile - you know what you have. However, don't sit in a bar bragging about your 'real Rolex' or you may find you get it 'confiscated' there is always someone more desperate than you...

Good luck and well done for getting into the idea of watches so early - my first ever pay packet bought me a Breitling and it's been a slippery slope ever since.

I bought a pre-owned (year-old) GMTII from watchfinder in 2003. It's never been off my wrist and I could sell it back to them for £500 more than I paid for it.

I also bought a Datejust s/s in 1987 new for £800 and could get £1,200 for it today minimum.

A Rolex is like carrying your rainy day emergency money around on your wrist

Don't hesitate to buy it. As has already been suggested, strongly consider pre-owned. You'll save a packet and, if serviced, will be as good as new.

And DON'T worry about people thinking it is fake. YOU will know it is real and that is all you need to know!

Just buy it, I bought my Sub date with my first pay packet in Bahrain 1990 for £900, must be worth a lot more than that now. Just got my name on a waiting list for a SS Daytona, can't wait!!

Lets not get to carried away with the amount you can sell an old Rolex for, you need to allow for inflation which takes a bit of shine off the return.

So your pride and joy probably is your car,you adore it but! when you are getting on with your daily life the car is not a part of it,its parked up,where as your Watch is with you always and for this reason alone the pleasure is constant, buy a good watch and enjoy,do not hesitate.

IMHO opinion only three brands are worth the investment if you are looking for a return in the future,Patek Phillipe,Rolex,Cartier.

Never buy secondhand without all the Original Doc's,Registration Certs and Box are present, like cars history counts.
