Hi Folks my friend and I have just completed a body lift and outrigger refurb; everything is nearly back together but the f@^*er won't turn over. The imobiliser activates the fuel pump, there's power at the started moter but nothing happens when we turn the key; it doesn't even attempt to turn. I've been through our check list of electrical connections
about 20 times, I've tripple check we've not pinched or trapped anything but everything checks out. I've taken the known good battery from my chim as his battery was a bit dodgy before still no joy.

Suggestions of what I should check would be greatly appriciated! It's now become personal and the its getting dangerously closew to boot meets paintwork time..... I actually *hate* it now!!

Aggh!!

I presume no click from the starter solenoid, and that you have checked both the main +12v feed and the 12v feed to the solenoid actually has +12v on it when the key is turned to "start"?

If so, then it could be a jammed starter solenoid. This has happened to me, and it was diagnosed (wrongly) as "the hot start problem" when in fact the solenoid rod is a little too big and needed a quick skim in a lathe...

Now that's a goo point defo 12v on turn of the key at the solenoid, I'm thought it clicked the first time; but not 100% sure. I'll give it a whack tomorrow if that doesn't do it I'll look at removing it.

Good suggestion thanks

Pasco... Hadn't thought of that at all; it seems to unclock and run the fuel pump but not familiar with the meta system; doesn't work like the alarm on my chim. Car is an L reg 1993
Might be worth a call to carl baker tomorrow

Keep em coming folks!! I knew you guys would come up with some good suggestions

The Meta alarm in mine stopped the fuel pump as well as the starter when it was being awkward.

Did you remember the earth strap from the engine to the chassis?

Yep double checked it and removed it and put it back. Will check again tomorrow as I was nearing spanner flinging shout mode! There comes a point where you have to put the torque wrench down and cool down

If you have 12V at the solenoid wire with the key in crank position you've eliminated the immobiliser and anything else upstream at a stroke. You should have a permanent 12V at the thick starter motor wire. Check for continuity between the starter motor body and the battery negative terminal.

If you have all these things there's a fault with the starter motor, either an internal electrical fault or a mechanical fault.

Does the solenoid click with the key in cranking position? If not try tapping the motor with a bar with the key held in cranking position.

Okie dokie, looks like a fault with the starter motor - no click, but smacking it with a hammer whilst it was being cranked seems to free something only for it to immediately stick again....

It went something like this:
Friend cranking car = nothing
Friend cranking car + me smacking the starter with hammer - nothing for a couple of smacks then a click, catch, hear the starter spin and then nothing.

On another note, anyone out there with a pre-serp griff able to photo the rear of the alternator for me, the photo I have isn't clear enough and I'd really like to double check it.
