1995 500 twin fans problem

Firstly, the search is still down 
I had a problem on Friday in that after a long journey in traffic and heat, I thought the fans didn't sound right when running. Investigation revealed that only one was working. I have had a problem with one fan not long after getting the car, but it appeared to be a loose connection in the connector one the one fan, easily sorted. Two years later it's the same one that's gone, however this time the connector looked burnt and had melted slightly. After struggling to part the halves, I plugged the non working fan into the working one's power connector and bingo, fan runs, so it isn't knackered. I got a multimeter on the other connector and nothing.
So, the question is - I am pretty sure I have only 1 40a fuse and 1 relay for both fans (as evident on my fuse board), but there are 4 wires splitting 2 connectors, one for each fan. Do both sets of wires eventually become one at the relay, or am I missing something? As a quick fix I have wired both fans to the one working connector and it seems OK, no popped fuses or welded relays. I'd rather get it back to the way it was though, thoughts?
As a last note I sprinted the car at Abingdon on the Saturday, and although I only had one fan the car ran fine, never getting anywhere near too hot - the one fan was working hard though!

OK chaps, just checked again and I'm sure there is only one fuse / relay. The layout matches the handbook, which only lists one of each too. See the pic below:
The fan relay is the yellow one top left. I have pulled each of the others to check they operate what the handbook says they do and all check out OK. The 40a fuse is the first one on the left, again the only one marked for fans.
Below is the mess hanging off the main loom - the only two relays on here are the two regular silver ones.
As for the earth, which one is it, the one by the radiator? Also, if that was dodgy would in not affect both power feeds? Thanks for the info so far

Ah your fusebox is different to mine - I have another relay below the brown one.
On mine (yours may be different), each of the fans has a connector, with a live feed and earth, which are separate. Easy enough to check just make up a short lead and connect it in place of the existing earth and then earth it.
