Hi all. Heading to Austria in the S2000 in late July. I'm trying to find somewhere nice to stay on the way there for two nights to help break up the journey. So far I'm thinking of trying the black forest (but don't know where), Bavaria (could be too far to drive in one day from Calais + don't know where) or a traditional city or town (again, no idea). Access to a bar and restaurant nearby would be a bonus.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Munich is a beautiful city especially if you like your food and beer. Bern in Switzerland is good too. What kind of things are you looking to do? Culture/arts, driving, drinking etc?

The Black Forest has some great driving roads and Friberg is a lovely old city surrounded by vinyards located pretty much in the middle.

Another vote here for Freiburg.

Saverne (near Strasbourg) is pretty agreeable also.

Thanks for the info so far. Really don't have a strict criteria for where we stay other than it should be typically german with the availability of something to do in the day a few pilsners in the evening.

Will check out the suggestions so far today.

Cheers

Colmar (France but near the French, German and Swiss border, Strasbourg area) is a beautiful medieval town that I stopped in on the way to the Dolomites.

One night in the Black Forest area, then on to Interlaken in Switzerland for a night, then on to Austria. Not too far on either day, you'll arrive early enough to have a good look round. Grindlewald (North face of the Eiger) is close to Interlaken and well worth a visit.

Thank you for the correct spelling.

Oh I forgot to mention, the local story goes something along the lines of, if you fall into the guttering that runs all around and through the city then you have to marry a girl from Freiburg. After a couple they can a pain not to fall into!!
