I have to say I'm starting from a place of complete ignorance here as to how the average race circuit is designed but why is Herman Tilke the man who was able to design so many circuits which in the end seem to produce some fast but pretty dull racing?

He should be shot for ruining Hockenheim.

Turkey is the only good track that he has designed, and that didn't produce the goods this last time round. The rest are abominable.

John Hugenholtz was pretty good... wink

end of story - most of his circuits are woeful.

unfortunately he seems to be buddies with Bernie so it is more or less a given that to get your circuit signed up by FOM, you need Tikle.... mad

ETA
oh the other thing you need to do: pay Bernie a shedload of cash! (and not be the BRDC)

Too wide and lacking in interesting features. Almost always seem to be designed from a perspective of safety first, which is never conducive to good racing.

I always thought they were so wide because he thought that was how you encouraged overtaking (which patently doesn't make any sense)

You can say the same with most other circuits

true but I assume that they sort of more developed rather than were designed from scratch by a guy who i also assume is an expert and therefore knows how to design in potentially exciting races.

as I said I know nothing about race track design, its history or how they are designed.

He seems to race on the Nordschilfe so perhaps he's now got some better ideas however I don't see what's wrong with safety.

In any case his circuits provide more opportunities than, for example, Monaco does.

But Monaco has always been the exception rather than the rule. and yes I also know that overtaking has always been a bit of a myth too. its just that many of his circuits don't seem to provide much of a spectacle, perhaps because of how wide they are. They always seem a bit remote to me and the sort of circuit where the strategy is more important than getting close enough to the other driver to make him make a mistake.

Silverstone is quite wide by some standards.

Ok, it would be nicer if the fans could get closer to the cars at Tilke circuits & I do think he could do with some competion in the market but there is a limit to what you can do on a flat piece of ground to turn it into an F1 circuit.

Perhaps new circuit builders should be obliged to put them on hills, at least that way they'd look better.

Here's Tilke's website: http://www.tilke-ac.de/index.php - some info there about the circuit in Abu Dhabi.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Tilke Wikipedi entry in German. Note the racing expereince on the Nordschliefe

We live in different times. Old days you found a piece a of land (hopefully with interesting contours)and carve out a circuit but now its done on computers.

Today you have to deal with a tonne of bureaucracy: land ownership (Tilke said he had to fight for as much sq metre he could get at Austria/A1 Ring and Hockenheim), enviro-mentalists, NIMBYs, safety run-off, etc etc.

The major gripe with Tilke is that he builds identi-kit tracks as if his CAD package was akin to a Scaletrix set: long straight-hairpin, high speed esses

Saying that, Hugenholtz had a similar pattern with Jarama and Zandvoort but at least there was thought into using the contours for corners.

Good effort considering he's dead.

If, however, you meant Tikle, then yes, he ruined Fuji too.
