Yesterday I noticed that the offside rear brake disc appears to have uneven wear on it.

The outside edge of the disc still had 'rust' on it (a strip about 1.5cm wide) which was from cleaning the car.

Now, given i'd done the best part of two hours driving, this seems fairly significant. Any ideas on a solution? what to do?

Is it an expensive garage job?

Sounds like something I discovered on my Cerb over the weekend. I suspect a build up of dirt and brake dust is stopping either the pad from moving in the caliper, or the pistons from moving. It's not a hard job to take the caliper off and give everything a good clean. I sometimes shave a few thousands off the edges of the backplates of the pads so that they can move a bit more freely.

In fact you'll probably find this article quite helpful if you want to remove the caliper and clean everything up - http://www.thetvrsite.com/suspension-steering-brak...

You can use brake cleaner from Halfords to clean up the pads and calipers, and probably a good idea to use latex gloves otherwise yours hands will be black for a week.
