Apart from the Castle (done) what are the top three things to do/sights to see in Edinburgh?

Holyrood Palace is quite interesting, there is the Royal yacht Britannia in Leith, or Deep Sea world just over the Forth Bridge at North Queensferry. A bit further away there is the Museum of Flight at East Fortune near Haddington on the A1 south of Edinburgh.

National Museum of Scotland:- under going a refurb so not much on display.

Museum of Flight as mentioned well worth a visit.

Dynamic Earth as well.

How much time have you got to kill?

You could probably fairly easily squeeze Holyrood, a walk up Arthur's Seat and the Parliament into a day.
Good view over the city from the top of Calton Hill for the mere return of about a 10 minute walk up from Waverly station.

Mary King's Close and Brittania are good shouts as well.

Laugh at the tram works?

Ghost tour
Fudge shop
Ned dodging in Hunter Square
Edinburgh Dungeon (not been myself, so no idea if it's crap or not)

If you drove - take a day out to drive up to Glencoe, have lunch at the Clachaig Inn then come back via Fort William.

Perhaps showing my age -is Camera Obscura still on the go ---rhetoric question -

Yep -http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/your_visit/find_us.asp.

And another favorite - a night out in Rose street .(seem to remember from apprentice days that some pubs were to avoided)

EFA (Although it is hard to avoid unless you take that wee ferry to the
south of it.)

The only thing is that it is open really weird times, its almost as if they don't want visitors. I have never managed to get there when it has actually been open.
It is not open at the weekend.
It is only open for 4 hours a day on weekdays. Between 12 and 4 I think.

Really annoying as I have wanted to go there for ages but have missed its opening times every time. DAMN THEM! :shakefist:

I should have added Spean Bridge, Dalwhinnie etc as I meant to imply to come back across toward the A9 rather than actually recommending FW itself biggrin

Actually I'm going to retract my slagging of FortBill, OK it's not a tourist
attraction but feel I've fell on to the "slag off Fort Bill bandwagon", it's
not thet bad and I've had some great nights there after skiing/ climbing.

Not a great advert for what's close by but OK for getting the beers in
after a day on the hills. Worth passing thru' though for the trip through
Spean/ Dalwhinnie etc as you say. A9 means avoiding accidents, there were several on it last weekend, and plod.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
We're off up tomorrow and have two nights booked in the Black Room at TigerLilys. Have booked Wedgewood for Friday evening and everything else is still open (ie up for the wife to tell me what we're doing) and subject to weather.
Like the idea of getting out in the car especially as it's the first time the Cayman S is going north of the border but this is a city trip as we often go to (and way beyond) Fort William. So the car is getting parked for a couple of days as we do the tourist things.
