Hi Guys/Gals,

Sisters 2005 BMW X5's ABS light has come on and the speedometre has completley stopped working? Are these two issues linked?

Under warranty so was taken into Eastern BMW in Edinburgh, they allegedly fixed it only for the problem to re-appear? Taking to another franchise but was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and what was the fix.

Wouldn't surprise me if the one of the wheel speed sensors is used for the speedo as well as the ABS system.

Ahhaa! Good theory and you are probably correct, should one of there "Highly Trained" "Most respected in the UK" technicians not have known this?

The normal approach to fixing a wheel sensor is to unplug it, blow on it or hit it, and then plug it in again and clear the fault codes. Then the fault reappears at some point later.

I bought an AMG merc with the ABS light on. The speedo didnt work and neither did cruise control.

One ABS relay later and hey presto all cured.

So yes, there is a direct link between the ABS and the speedo.

Quick Update - Just had a call from Glasgow BMW, faulty wheel sensor. Now all i have to do is call the cowboys from BMW in Edinburgh to ask them if they replaced it with a new one "or" just blew on it and cleared the codes!

P.S. This should surely come under there warranty? Receptionist was not sure.

its the NSR rear that the speedo runs off so check if they changed it. the bolts are a bugger to get out so you'll be able to tell if they removed it as it'll probably look a mess or they would have replaced it.
