Afternoon all,

I'm looking at taking my wedge out for a couple of track days this summer, and although the noise is one one of the main reasons I love the car, I'm not certain the marshalls will.

Currently my wedge is waiting for a new exhaust manifold etc. so I'm not in a position to test for the noise level. So... exactly how noisy is the average 350?

Thanks,
Chris

anywhere between 96 and 135 db.....most standard exhausts will pass trackday scrutineering.

As a track day will cost anything from £99 to £275 .. then it really pays to get someone local to test your exhaust before you go.

The test is usually 4500 rpm at 1/2 meter and 45 degrees to exhaust (and to the side not middle of the car).

Yea this will be the yearly nurburgring pilgrimmage (95db limit) with my a few of my friends so I'll get it checked. I just won't be able to do so for a few weeks.

Looks like silencing will be required then. What are peoples recommendations, exhaust cans? Any reccommended suppliers?

Thanks,
Chris

Good idea to get it checked before you go as my old 350 on it's original exhaust was 103DB

I have had a sports exhaust fitted to my 400SE which pulled 128DB at BNG last year eek

I'll try and find my noise meeter and bring to BBWF.

Also you may want to argue when they ask for 4500 RPM as it 3/4 max which is only 4000 on a Rv8

Its strange my 400SE was 108 at 4000 RPM, but I'm using the same (very same I took it off) and fitted to the racer,(this also has no rear piping, just straight out the side from the silencer) and this is only 95 db at 4200 RPM

Cool, will definately get it tested. Hopefully I can borrow the noise meter from work. Unfortunately I won't be making it to BBWF frownfrown

Does anybody have any experience with the Tower View track silencer thing, or any other bolt-on silencers?

Thanks,
Chris

Well - if you are near Woking / Guildford you are welcome to pop round and test it at my place as I have a meter.

Tower View track day silencer worked for me (on 400SE with standard exhaust) at last years Nurburgring visit. The previousyear I was warned about the noise level.
I did not need to use it at Zolder (drive by noise limit)

The Tower View device is an insert in to the exhaust tailpipe, with a bolt for securing it.
I had a straight piece of stainless pipe made up locally; as a replacement for the polished exhaust trim, so that I did not need to drill holes in the polished trim.
The tailpipe trim on my 400SE is retained by a pinch bolt, but the pipe with the track day silencer included a bolted lug connection to the exhaust pipe to avoid blowing it off.

With the track day silencer as "standard" (out of the box) you could hear the exhaust gas trying hard to escape, and detect a slight reluctance to rev to max rpm.
You can adjust the amount of wire wool in it :- less wool = less resistance to gas flow = more noise.
This is probably best done with a noise meter so you can optimise it.

If you are going to BBWF I can show you the set up.
