Oh No!! The horn's packed up and we can't fix it...

Paul spent Sat and Sun trying to fix this and a few other bits and pieces that had stopped working on the Griff, but no joy!

There is no feed to the horn, either with or without presssing the horn button. We connected the horns directly to the battery and they work so that's at least one thing ruled out.

Is there supposed to be a permanent live, with the horn making the earth circuit or vice versa?

The relay clicks but as there's no feed at all we suspect something else is at fault.

Presumably the O/S horn is fed and this loops over to the N/S horn.

Any ideas gratefully received?

Cheers

Try removing the earth lead under the steering column and give it a clean. Or you may need to clean sh1t out of the slip ring. Mine was the first one and easiest to do. Its under the top steering column clamp. good luck

I presume you've checked the fuses? They also power the fans (one one side, on some cars, maybe) so they often blow.

Blip the throttle or shout!. Failing that, try a bicycle bell. Or one of those horn jobbies that Robert Llewellyn uses on Scrapheap Challenge.

Thanks guys - we'll give it another go. Not tonight though as it's Paul's birthday today and I'm taking him out for a meal - and !

We have tried the fuses and these seem to be ok although I do need to check that the fans are kicking in...

Thanks again.

My horn stopped working a few weeks ago - just before the MOT. Turned out to be the earth connection underneath the steering column cowling. Removed the cowling and cleaned the earth connector before putting it back into the back of the horn push.

Have taken the horn push off and everything is clean and dry. Also taken off the cowling around the steering column and cleaned up the slip ring and the springy thing. Replaced the fuse just in case. Still nothing. I can't even get a circuit (live or earth). Is the horn wired to be permanently live and the earth makes the circuit or vice versa? Even cleaned the earth points on the front - great job that was. One of the bolts didn't have anything under it so I cleaned it anyway.
Should I be able to get a cicuit - if so how?
Don't know if the fans are working - will speak with MrsFFG.
Could it be the relay?? It does click so I can only assume it works.
Crap birthday as I smashed my company car and never went out for a meal ass it was too late when I goty home.

As Zippy500 and JIGGS have said your problem is probably the earth connection to the steering column.Check that the column is earthed,if not you have found the problem. The earth connection to the column is via a crimped lug on one of the bolts which fix the column just under the dash.In my case it was the passenger side bolt and very difficult to see.
Try a search and look at " I,m not horny"

Will look at suggested earth points but can't understand why there is no live to the horn or why I couldn't get it to work when I fed an earth direct from my other cars battery - I also tried thsi with the live but no joy?
Also can't find link. I've looked at Griff and TVR (all).
Thanks for the help.

you say the relay is clicking so the fault has to be the relay or after the relay as the horn "push" will be on the low current side. Is there not that bundle of plugs and sockets in the inner wing that goes to the horn ? It would be easier to do a relay mod and run a new cable though, but of course one should do the wire job properly if it is at fault!

You have checked the fuses? The horn circuit was used to supply one of the fans and this could have blown the fuse and caused the problem.

Yep - we replaced the fuse just in case - but still no joy...

And both fans work, have you tried swapping the relay. It may be sticking??

Hi BB

Both fans work - although it's not getting as warm in the cold weather!

We haven't swopped the relay but it does 'click' so we were assuming that meant it was working? ...

A relay "clicking" does not necessarily mean the contacts are making, they could be burnt and have a high resistance.
