Hi all

I currently have a Canon Ixus 700 and looking to upgrade to a DSLR.

I also have an old Canon EOS500 SLR from late 90's with two A/F lenses - one Canon and a Tamron.

My line of thinking is, can I just buy a Canon body (Dxx or whatever) and use my existing lenses or do these new cameras have different mounts/other technology that prevents me from using my existing lenses.

I'd do a search as I'm sure the question will have been asked, but shut for maintenance.

Thanks

Nick

Should work fine. Same mount, same lenses.

The only thing that has changed in recent years is that the motors have got faster, but you have to be seriously into photography to even notice that.

The Canon one definitely will work, I'm not sure about the Tamron. I know that some old Sigma lenses that work with film cameras will not work with digital cameras, although they can be modified for a price. The same may apply to the Tamron.

To know for sure, take the lens in question down to Jessops and try it out. Ok, they aren't the cheapest place, but I've always found them quite friendly to deal with - which in my book counts.

What's your budget for a body Nick? Any particular one you fancy?

Hi 4hero

No idea, but I have a couple of lenses that are likely to fit a Canon, so that will be my first step.

My sister bought a Nikon the other week D5000? I think, really pleased with it.

Not sure if you will be photographing motorsport, but the 40D is a stunning camera (6.5 frames per second). I have a 40D, and the 350D, but the 40D is superb for the price.

If your lens works on the 50D, then it'll work on the 40D (50D replaced the 40D, but is £220 more expensive).

Camerapricebuster is great for comparing prices, the 40D is currently retailing at around £590.

You will need to remember that if buying one of the cropped sensor DSLR's Canon 450D (is the 40D full frame??) that your lenses will be subject to x1.6 conversion so for example a 100mm becomes 160mm etc
