I use these guys, there quite good and can even give advice over the phone if required. Does cost more than most though.

Depends on what you want to find out, after a discussion with someone at HPI, they informed me they will clear off a car if it is stolen and then recovered without damage, however usually the cheaper checks (like http://www.usedcarexpert.co.uk/ £3.95) will still have a record of whether it was stolen/recovered or not,

Bit of a late reply, but I've found mycarcheck.com to be very good. It was reccomended to me by another PHer and I've been using it for cars I look at. For £3.95 you get a £5000 finance guarantee and the following info:

•Subject to Outstanding Finance2
•Stolen (Police Interest)
•Stolen & Recovered
•Write off / Total Insurance Loss (Recorded Accident Damage)
•Scrapped by the DVLA
•Subject to Plate Transfers
•Colour Changes
•Make and Model
•Number of Former Keepers
•VIN (Chassis Number) Check
•Engine Number and Size
•Exported
•Date First Registered
•Year Manufactured
•Colour
•Fuel
