I may have a job opening in Newcastle area, what is it like there?
Only ever driven through or gone on the ferry to Norway/Sweden from there. What areas are best to avoid when looking for accommodation? What is the normal cost of living for two adults, compared to South East?

I lived there for about 9 months, the best area by a long way is Jesmond.

Most violent UK city at kicking out time IMHO.

The office would be outside Newcastle itself, in North Tyneside, so probably better to search for something closer there. Is Whitley Bay any good?
Most violent city in UK doesn't sound too promising, tbh.

I have a friend who lives in Whitley Bay - Is a very very nice town - old victorian houses - well the ones on the beach are! I would recommend there!

Just at kicking out time on a Friday/Saturday night and you can avoid it. Just seems to be more fighting going on than I've seen in other cities in the UK of a smiliar size.

The other think that shocked me about Newcastle was the number of girls pissing in the street once the pubs had closed. It's the only in the UK where I've frequently seen that kind of behaviour yuck

Thanks Dave and Fittster, sounds like Newcastle wouldn't really be our cup of tea, but rather Whitley Bay.

I like it, but then I may be a little biassed.

Plenty to see and do in the area, a pleasant enough city centre these days, great nightlife, and not too far removed from all sorts of other nice places.

As for where to stay, depends where you'd be based and how far you're willing to commute / how long you want it to take. Property wise it's certainly a lot cheaper to both buy & rent than the south east. If you want to be fairly close to the city Jesmond is nice, if a little pricey. Lots of students around too.

As for the most violent city at kicking out time, can't say I agree at all, it's far from perfect in that respect but I've yet to find a city that isn't. Supposedly it is/was rated the best in europe and something like 9th best in the world for nightlife. Can't say I quite believe that either but it is very good.

The city itself is very nice, lots of interesting old Georgian architecture, lots of bridges, good shops, etc.

But the real bonus is a 90 minutes drive to the northwest you'll have some of the nicest scenery, camping, and off-road MTBing tracks in the country.

So many different areas to choose from, really depends what you want. I work with a guy who lives in Jesmond, handy for Newcastle city centre but also can be full of (posh) students if you pick the wrong bit. Another guy lives on the Quayside and a few at Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.

I'd recommend getting a hotel for a couple of weeks and taking some trips to find what works for you. Ask around at work too, they might be able to recommend somewhere close by.

Newcastle is a party town for sure, you have to experience the Bigg Market at least once. You may never want to again, but it's an eye opener...

If you are used to SE prices, you will have a very pleasant surprise. Not just property being cheaper, but beer and food too.

Went to Uni there. The local's sense of belonging and identity spurred me back to Cornwall to be a full on hillbilly.

Nothing like being on someone's turf!

I would 100% recommend it.

Whitley Bay there's nowt there tbh... it reminds me a bit of Yarmouth for some reason.

Although I'm not up north very much...

Jesmond Dean seems to be the place. Does Santiago Munez still play for them?

Lived in Newcastle for 7 years as a "southerner gone north" and never had the slightest hint of trouble when out and about most nights.

Fantastic city, would move there again in a heartbeat if I could get the work.

Take a trip up there and have a good look round over a few days. Metro system links in the city with North Tyneside and Whitley Bay so easy to get around even without a car.

Avoid Byker, Wallsend, Meadowell etc in the east and Benwell/Fenham in the west.
