I'm selling my trusty 450D and wanted to ask your opinion on what price to pitch it at. It's less than a year old, in superb condition (boxed) - and I may sell with or without the kit lens (18-55). Is £300 taking the proverbial?

The kit lens is worth next to nothing and you can buy a new 40D body for £500. I think you would be doing well to get £300 for a 450d but you never know.

As a matter of interest I sold my 350D for £100 with the lens.

Good luck with the sale.

I don't know about the 350D for £100, but you'd be doing very well to get your hands on a 450D for much under £400, based on the results I've just seen for used ones on Ebay (actual sales, rather than asking prices).

Remember, your 350D has been replaced twice by newer iterations (or 3 times if you include the 1000D), whereas the 450D hasn't been replaced yet.

Have a look on ebay, see how they're doing. I got a very fair price for a 350D I sold on ebay.

Cheers,

FT.

Quotes corrected. smile

Is the 500D actually supposed to be a replacement for the 450D? I'd assumed it was pitched at a rather different market segment?

Just anecdotally, take a look at the threads that crop up on here. There's maybe one or two a week from people asking advice in choosing between the 450D and competing Nikons or other brands. I don't think I've seen a single thread asking the same about the 500D?

When the 450D came out, it did exactly what the 400D did, but with some upgrades to the specs, for a lower RRP. At that point, prices for the 400 were bound to fall rapidly, whether new stock or second hand as the 450D was an obvious direct replacement.

With the 500D, the price is a lot higher, and it adds the rather pointless, gimmicky camcorder functionality which I don't think I'm alone in not wanting, and certainly in not wanting to pay so much extra for, and the fact that used 450Ds are averaging £400 on Ebay would seem to support this?

It would be fascinating to know what Canon's sales figures look like for the two models side by side.

Canon have always ran the new version along side the old one for a bit apart from the xD's

50D wasnt a direct replacement for the 40D is about the only real rulebreaker here but even then the 40D is fanishing from the shelves.

I also wonder if the pricing differential has something to do with when the stock arrived in the country compared to when Canon (et al) adjusted their RRP in response to the falling value of the GB pound (allegedly). The 500D would certainly have taken recent exchenge rates into account. The 450D maybe not but any expected fall in price would not need to happen (for marketing purposes) if the replacement model pricing could be kept high. Plus by then the price was underpinned to some extent by the availability of the 1000D.
