The other thread re being scared got me thinking about situations when you have had to deliver bad news, and been truly worried/scared about delivering it. Not looking for horrifically bad situations (like having to inform of death etc) but serious situations that have a level of humour to them in hindsight.

I remember being 19 years old and house sitting girlfriends family home, whilst she was on holiday with her parents. The catch was I had to look after her cat.

Sitting in one night with as mate playing sensible soccer we heard a commotion from outside. On looking in the back garden we saw that a pit bull type thing had the cat I was looking after around the throat with it's teeth. After a couple of whacks with (sharp side) of shovel, the dog ran back to pikey owner, and cat legged it. Finally found cat, took it to PDSA and went away for the weekend with the boys! Upon returning I called PDSA to ask after cat.

Day 1 - not good, is physically ok apart from infection in leg.
Day 2 - very poorly infection getting worse
Day 3 - no change
Day 4 - call back tomorrow
Day 5 - much better - expect it to make a full recovery now THEY HAVE AMPUTATED FRONT LEG - should be out by weekend

So cat is still in PDSA whilst I drive to collect family from airport thinking of how to break the bad news.

Conversation went like this:-

Me - How was holiday
GF - good. etc etc How is cat?
Me - Much better since leg was amputated a couple of days ago
GF - WTF!

Not much fun - but cat went onto have a long life (as far as I know) and it would have been dead if we had not got involved.

Another story but from a mates Dad's perspective.

My mate had a bad car crash, broken legs, pelvis, and in a coma. Upon coming round from coma his Dad was called and headed straight to hospital.

On arriving at hospital my mate asked his Dad what had happened, and what was recovery like etc etc. His Dad explained that he had badly broken legs, but would walk again, the car was trashed etc, and that not to worry that he had permanently lost sight in one eye as he had just driven to hospital with a patch on (which he proceeded to pull from pocket), and he managed to find his way there!
