Hi Guys

After experiencing the common problem of a rotten ten year old chasis I managed to find one of the later 2000 model chasis and have had the hassle of blasting the power coating off and drilling it so it can be galvanised. Went for this option as I have a Lotus Esprit Turbo which is nearly 30 years old which had the chasis galvanised from new and is as good as the day it was made. This has prompted me to go through all this aggravation to do the Cerbera as this seems to be the major issue on the Cerberas. So I am now looking to overhaul my original chasis and have it galvanised and making an exchange program available for all other owners who would like hassle free and rust free motoring. Would like to have some feed back on this matter. Will have photos available on rebuild soon.

Nice to see someone else going down this route, I also had an Esprit and that was what made up my mind on rust proofing the chassis.
Only bit of advice I would give is try and protect the threads in the chassis, I left mine open to aid flow of galv, but it was one heck of a job re-threading all of them, the tap would not bite so it was many hours of work.
Well worth it in my opinion, it is such a good feeling knowing the chassis is virtually bomb proof now, I couldn't stand it any longer looking at flakey powder coating!

Best of luck with rebuild, look forward to pics

There's a risk that the chassis will distort if you hot dip it. If worst comes to worst, who would bear the cost of putting it right?

A much easier solution, have it zinger coated then paint it, apparently the zinger coat is an electrolytical zinc coating that can take some damage without rusting, even if the paint gets chipped.

Have a word with Longbow, the guy who did a complete nut and bolt restoration on his cerb on here.

Galvanising sounds great, but, how much are we talking here?

It's going to be thousands for someone else to do isn't it?

The actual galvanising seems cheap, but...for people like myself, getting all the bits off that are attached to the chassis is more than a challenge.

Any idea on how much would someone charge to take it all off and put it all back on?

I am sure I saw on the TV many many years ago someone running a current through metal and it protecting it from rusting....? Maybe I dreamed it, I was prob in my early teens. I think it was on the BBC science programme (Tomorrows World)?

Hi

Sorry for not geting back sooner, have been trying to make the water pipes which are under battery as you can not buy them anymore, as soon as I have made a set for my car will make 6 sets moore. These will be in polished s/steel.Back to the chassis,it has been a bit of a pain re-tapping holes ,may try wooden plugs next time. The chassis has not twisted ,but has put sum pounds on which should make it last for a long time. Will post pics as soon as I have worked out how to do so.

How much weight do you think it has put on.

Also what are the differences in the early and late chassis?

tbh if you were suppling an early chassis and I had a late one that would put me off....

Also, do you have an idea of cost. (pm me if you want)

The only other issue is the chassis number plate... frown

I have a 'new' Powder coated chassis, I've had it for about 2 years now, and originally my thinking was to offer it on an exchange basis. But everyone seems to prefer re-furbing their own chassis, which is what I would probably do in all honesty.

tbh if there are chassis out there ready to go it will save about 2 weeks of hassle carting a chassis to blaster, welders and powder coaters.
