Emmigration causing career issues- advice or ideas.

Hi all,
First of all I emigrated from Scotland to the USA in July 2008, got married in November 2008 and entered the immigration process early this year (waiting on tax forms etc. to file).
My original intention was to go to Law School in the autumn of 2009 and reboot my career from bodge the builder to Larry the lawyer with a view to going into civil litigations, bankruptcies etc.
Obviously this has gone out the window since the application deadline was February 2009. Okay no problem I'll set the clock back and take 5-6 months to work and pay off some bills and save some cash.
Eerr no.
Spoke to the immigration lawyer and she's expecting my SSN, work authorisation and resident status sorted by December 2009/ January 2010. The delay with the Criminal background check will stall my application and things are going very, very slowly at the USCIS & INS these days.
I can't sit the LSAT until I have my SSN nor can I apply to Law School without it. I need to go to a junior college/night school to brush up on my Mathematics/Algebra and a few other courses but I can't even do that without an Social Security Number or California Driving Licence.
By my reckoning the earliest I'll get to apply for law school will now be in October of 2010 which means a class starting date of Autumn 2011 !
Furk !

Not sure why you have not got the SSN yet. You should have that with in 2 weeks of stepping off the plane. I know everyone has told you differently and even the SS office will tell you months. However, you can step off the plane and walk in to the SS office. They will look at you a bit strange. But, they will do all the paper work then and wait until your I94 has been processed by the imigration at teh airport. As soon as this happens you have a number. the other thing they will tell you is not to call them, ignore this and call it does help.
Also, you can work and not get paid until you have an SS number. Once you have it you can get back pay.
