Why is it when i try to buy an item on Ebay the sellar only seems to accept a PayPal account transaction? When the site says i can use a Visa card payment,i did have a PayPal account but we "fell" out after my account was plundered through their lack of security over 3 years ago.Anyone got any ideas to get around using PayPal?
I sell quite frequently on eBay and I only accept PayPal. Reason? I don't have to wait for a cheque to arrive (and clear), I get paid immediately and I'm afforded protection from fradulent buyers (this works both ways if you follow the rules).
You could ask the seller if they'd accept a cheque or a Postal Order, but you're leaving yourself open to being ripped-off with absolutely no recourse if you go down that route.

It could be because on many items ebay give sellers NO CHOICE in what they accept. I recently sold an ipod, put the ad through accepting cheque, cash, postal order, bank transfer etc etc.. But then the lovely folks at ebay informed me that for any electronics item I was only allowed to accept Paypal...

What?!?!Ebay are a bunch of
s. I am planning on selling my PowerBook in a few months... so I'll end up getting raped on Paypal charges to list and sell... Oh joy!

It's great isn't it? I got charged £6 for ebay fees and £6.60 for Paypal fees to sell an ipod for £188. So about 6.5% taken off, plus the joyful possibility of a chargeback/idiot buyer trying to send back a different ipod.Menguin said:

There are plenty of alternatives to eBay if you feel so strongly about eBay's service and fees... car boot sales, eBid, Amazon Marketplace, set your own eCommerce site up (if you have a business selling stuff), etc, etc.
If you find that eBay allows you to sell things you wouldn't normally be able to sell, you should be praising them, not whinging about how much they charge. If you don't like the fees, vote with your feet and go elsewhere. You can be sure of one thing... as long as people like you pay the fees, they will not be reduced!
Me? I don't have a problem with the fees OR PayPal, which gets a very unfair rap from people that don't know how to use it properly and listen to a lot of Internet hysteria.

I still don't agree with the amount they charge.
Err.... obviously you do agree - you continue to use the service. Slow day your end? Surely there must be more pressing things to concentrate on?

I use my car and pay road tax and petrol tax, despite getting the train to work and the possibility of driving a diesel or electric car.
FFS how hard is it to understand?
