Can anyone tell me what Nikons current entry level DSLR is please?

I know it used to be the D40 but it doesn't seem to be being sold by the likes of Jessops etc, the cheaper end of the range seems to start with the D60?

Or am i just looking in the wrong places?

Cheers

Dan

Ah right - yes I agree 6Mp is enough for most things. I'm sure the D40 started to be phased out when the D40x was launched. Grab one while you can.

Careful - unless all your lenses are AF-S then they wont work with a D40. The D40 has no on board focus screw drive.

They will work, you just have to focus them manually!
Bought one before xmas for £215 and possibly one of the best bargains I've ever nabbed.
Shame it's stealing all my beer money for lenses now.

Must. Have. Sigma 10-20.

I needed to replace one a couple of weeks ago, Jessops Chester were under the impression that it's now EOL so any in shops will be old stock.

Nikon have press conferences scheduled for July 30th and August 4th, speculation is that one of those dates is for the launch of a camera (D3000) to replace either the D40, D60 or both. So yeah, it's quite possible that the D40 has silently been discontinued in preparation.

Keep in mind that Nikon have a habit of not delivering anything for a while after an announcement, so while it might be worth waiting, you might just want to keep looking for a D40 somewhere.

Amazon still have the D40 in stock for £279.99 with the 18-55mm lens. That's where I bought mine a few months back.
