Finally happy with the SP tails, they never lined up properly before, but while I had them half off for the annual re-cat I had this idea:

Very crude, but effective!

Mine were 12mm out, despite being told they were made on a rig hence were mm perfect. Because of this they actually burnt and crazed/damaged the rear valence where they touched and I couldn't drive the car because of the damage they were causing. I had to get the rear valence repaired when I had another exhaust system.

I spent a long time measuring and checking others cars to determine it wasn't my rear valence was different like I was told.

Interesting to see someone else has the same issue.

However I'd be surprised at your fix. If you look carefully you'll see that tailpipes are dual skinned. There's an inner, narrower pipe that takes the exhaust gasses, fixed to a fatter outer pipe towards the rear of the tailpipe and obviously at the silencer box itself.

I wasn't too sure about putting that much stress on a double pipe, but fairplay if it works. I after I returned mine I heard in was 'adjusted' with a long bar inside.

Has anyone had any noticeable power gains from using one of these exhausts?

^^ they were the best on the market at the time, but there's better ways now. they're still good though and beautifully made (tailpipe offsets notwithstanding on certain sets it seems).

Brilliant! Mine are about an inch out, have been thinking about a fix for ages. Were yours equally toed in? When the rest of my zorst is aligned, the LH pipe is fine but the RH one is an inch to the left and hits the body, so was loathed to just pry them equally apart.

I considered something similar but with some species of clamp on the rhs to make a kink, so that that side bends preferentially.

This is great timing as I was thinking about this only today thumbup

Fwiw, alignment aside, I have been very happy with the SP. Sounds sublime.

Noise is good on the system, quite a nice bass quality, build quality was good apart from the alignment issue. Certainly TC's on which I based my purchased decision sounded great and fitted really well. Those fat tail pipes when correct fit well into the cutouts, although obviously with little room for error.

There were some interesting claims for this system on power increases, but some of that were on one that I think Trackcar said was replacing a possible collapsed internal system.

They certainly flowed well, especially with the cats removed, although my tests on my 4.2 gave me single figure gains over my sports exhaust. I made nearly the same just taking the cats out.

Really interesting to see how many of these systems have alignment issues after I was told I was the only one so it had to be my rear valence was poorly made or repaired. I'm fairly sure there was an earlier and later type systems with the earlier ones being better made. From my investigations/opinion it was the later ones that were poorer, possibly made cheaper?

rofl The real problem was when I drove off the extension lead that was holding the wood in place got left behind silly

I remember comparing measurements with you, they were about the same amount out. We got them around the same time, about three years ago now was it? Sorry to hear about your paint. I was a little worried about doing it but it worked fine, there was very little elastic limit to over come, with them being stainless I guess (glad they didn’t crack!) I think the bending took place inside the box, or where it joins as the pipes & their inners are still straight.

Mine were just like that before but bending them apart equally was ok. When re-fitting the linked de-cats I did them up till they were tight but could still just move then adjusted the tails to fit right then tightened the de-cats fully. The tails are the only part of the system you can see, so that’s the only bit alignment matters on, I think… wink
But then I also fitted some very large tie wraps round the exhausts hangers & the brackets next to them on the car, to stop the exhaust moving side to side during enthusiastic cornering. The guy from SP actually recommended this, I’d just never got round to it before. It hasn't moved yet.

that was correct, the actual gain for the SP over the previous good condition std TVR 4.5 exhaust was about 8hp if my memory serves me correctly (412hp (i think) to 420hp).

That equates to about the same percentage I saw on my 4.2, but I didn't get far off just removing the cats.

Not quite that far back. As for the damage, well that was just another cost associated with that exhaust, that I paid for, don't have, nor the original system, nor a refund.

Ho Hum.

Yet despite all that I can still find some good things to say as above...

Glad to see it worked for you too, it's nice to be able to go out & not worry about people looking at your rear end isn't it? wink

I'd have to ask the Mrs about that hehe

Thanks for the idea (and for trying it) - looks much better, used to spoil the look. Will try the cable ties next.

Hi Guys
Sorry to hear that you've been having problems. As Byker28i points out, we did see one case of a problem with alignment, despite original claims from the manufacturer that the box in question's pipes were in tolerance - it turns out that they were not and this was rectified.
I had not heard of any other problems, until now.
Having to "tweak" the pipes in the way that has been discussed is apparently perfectly ok, albeit that it should not have been necessary.
Could all parties affected by this please drop me a PM so I can record this problem with the supplier and ensure that we have their support in the unlikely event of an problems resulting from your intervention to resolve the matter.
Cheers
Matt

Selective memory IMHO as others had the same alignment issues when we were discussing the damage to my rear valence.

Guys, why do you need cable ties? I could understand it maybe with the separate sports tails. Is this simple to stop the hangers dropping out the rubbers or for alignment? My box seemed to hang ok, just the tailpipes were well out.

The back box is quite heavy and ties around the rubbers take some strain of the weight, and tying it sideways helps to stop the side to side swaying around corners, though I haven't looked where these would attach yet. I previously had the separate sports tails and found them a nightmare to align / maintain alignment. Byker, which exhaust do you have now and how do you find it? (don't say you look round the back and there it is.. LOL)

I went with the ACT quiet system in the end. It's 106db without cats rather than the 109db of the SP system, with the advantage that the trackday silencers were significantly cheaper than the SP system. Ok they look like baked bean cans when on rather than the beautifully designed SP ones, but then I hadn't planned on an extra £600 to silence something I was told was 98db decatted. Turns out it was 98db with cats.

The ACT system was much smaller, lighter (half the weight), didn't droop so much as the huge rear can as per the original/SP system and being in two separate parts was easier to align accurately. It has silencing in the main long pipes, the normal sports type rear cans and some additional silencing in the tailpipes. I'm running decat pipes as I wasn't happy about the heat being put into the cabin/gearbox/clutch. Of course decats also has the advantage of big pops and bangs, flames, lovely noise etc.

I thought it might impact performance but on a rolling road test after fitting it was still 342bhp just a couple under the SP system so I was very happy with it. Best the car has ever had is 347bhp.

Tim (ACT) did say some had fitted an adjustable bar between the two hangers to allow accurate alignment, but I found it just went together fine and I've never had any banging or alignment issues since fitting.

The original sports exhaust (before SP) I had to use cable ties to stop the hangers coming out the rubbers, which is why I asked.
