I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole unless it had the word "Carrera" on the engine lid which is unlikely given that this is a 1976 car.
All IMHO but based on weak engines, low power, undesirability and experience of having looked at about 10 of the damn things back in 1986 when looking to buy my first 911. Buy a good SC.

if it has carrera on the engine lid of a 1976 car it will have a 3.0 litr in it anyhow.
the reg 2.7 model is not the 911's finest hour.Depending on state of engine tune i would look for about 140 mph & 6.5-7.0 Secs to the magic 60mph.
These cars are heavier and more federalised than previous models. For a 1976 car it should just creep under the galvanised deadline, but you will be buying on condition, as stated above a 3.0 SC is a much better car and a safer bet.

yeh, i know an SC would be better but money is an issue. also, 911s are a wee bit thin on the ground in my neck of the woods.
been down the 944 turbo route. 911 just is so much of an icon really. thought a 2.7 might be a nice entry to the 911 scheme of things. maybe saving and going for an SC would be better.
btw, anyone like to recommend an approx. price for said 2.7. silver, nice condition etc?

mad to put a price on it really,as if somthg goes wrong you may need to spend £1000 on some part or other to £3000 for a top end rebuild to god knows what if it needs any serious bodywork.
As you say nice & it's silver that makes it easier to price say £7500-8000.....Porsche this age should be bought on condition, there is no classic premium for this model. good call on the 944 lark,,fine cars but once you have experience of a 911 it's difficult to go back.

Tuscan Thunder (are you a native North American by any chance?)
There are cheap SCs out there too at the £7k mark but there's a fair chance they are dogs too. Buying a car of this age is really about condition if you're not too bothered about outright performance.
So buy on condition first and do get an independent inspection from a Porche specialist and make sure they take a long hard look at the bodywork. Some OPCs only check out the mechanicals, which can often be cheaper to put right than a corroded tub.

To be honest, if you can't afford 10k, you shouldn't be looking at a 911.
Get a nice 944 or something.
A doggy 911 can cost a lot to put right - I have known SC bodywork/paint bills coming in at 7-8k.
I doubt you will save money buying a lot cheaper than 10k. You will probably spend the difference in the frist year putting it right. Bargains will be LHD 3.2s which are a lot more sorted and cost less to run. You may find one for 8500-9000 which won't bite.

Bloody hell Dom. That`s almost good advice!! Much more of that and I won`t be able to tell people how much bo**ocks and bu** sh*t there is on web forums. I`ll be able to unplug the computer and go off in search of sunshine.
