Google Adwords
Discussion
Last weekend I got an email from Google Analytics,(I have it on my website) giving me a £75 voucher for Adwords, haven't read it properly, but it looks like it's pay per click type, and then on Monday, I got a letter through the post from them, with another voucher for Adwords, upto the value of £50.
So, does anyone use Adwords, is it worth me giving this a go, or is it likely to be a con/scam? I just sort of think about it, and then think, 'ok, what's the catch?' cos there generally is one, I mean Google are not well known for being generous, so am unsure about the fact they seem to be giving something away.
Would appreciate any input please.

If its come from Google its not a scam, but to be sure log onto goolgle adwords through Googles website, once you have created the account (takes a bit of validating) enter the code on your email / letter.
If that credits your account with $50 or $75 it came from Google, all good so far.
Create your adwords advert, IMHO do not elect for the publisher option as this can be open to click fraud.
Run the adword system up to the free limit, if you have not noticed a difference in enquiries pause or delete it.

Adwords is great and it's normal for google to give out vouchers since most people end up spending way over the voucher amount due to badly setup campaigns. Plus it's pretty much 0 cost for google anyway.
Depending on your site you may or may not get much benefit from it, $75 could get you anything from 1500 clicks to as little as 5. Make sure to set your account to pre-pay only then you can only spend the amount you transfer in, set a sensible daily budget and try to be as specific as possible in your keywords.

Be careful with this, we gave it too much leeway with key words etc and racked up a £500 bill overnight and got no business. It now works ok, we've cut it down to just a few key words / phrases.
That demonstates the importance of setting a daily budget, so you dont get a big bill.Dick Dastardly said:
If there is one piece of advice I can give you it's this: Fill your campaigns with negative keywords.
Agreed. It's more about getting the right people to your site than just getting loads of people in.I also agree with the above comments about setting a monthly/daily budget in the system to ensure you don't get any big bills!
Negative keywords stop your ad showing if people search certain words.
If for example you sold sandwiches you could have the keyword "sandwich" in your campaign, so that whenever anyone searches for "sandwich" your ad would show up. It would also show up for "ham sandwich" or "cheese sandwich" etc.
If you don't do ham sandwiches you don't want to pay for people looking for them to come to your site so you could add in a negative keyword "ham". IIRC you specify negative keywords like: -ham
Right, I'm off to get some lunch...

What do you mean by negative keywords?
Hopefully this should explain it: http://www.libertymarketing.co.uk/blog/post/2009/0...A1 said:
Hi Guys
Dont mean to hijack the thread, but im new to adwords, what do people think of companies that maintain your campaigns and try and get you the best results? or is it worth spending some time learning and doing it yourself?
There are a million and one companies out there that claim to be experts, but truth is anyone can get into that business, so I'd strongly suggest doing some due diligence and most importantly go on recommendations.Dont mean to hijack the thread, but im new to adwords, what do people think of companies that maintain your campaigns and try and get you the best results? or is it worth spending some time learning and doing it yourself?
Most of these companies will just charge you a flat 10% fee on top of whatever your advertising spend is, meaning they haven't really got an incentive to get you quality, relevant traffic as it will likely reduce their fee!
That said, going trial and error yourself, you will waste a decent chunk of money whilst you learn so a good agency is probably money well spent, and if you take an interest you can probably teach yourself alongside with a view to taking over after a year or so.
Having run the odd campaign using Google Adwords in the distant past, make the landing page completely relevant or you will waste your money. So land on a page people can buy an item on, rather than your home page, if they want to explore they can navigate to your home page. Specific keyword phrases can be cheaper too. Tiffany is going to afford a lot of clicks, but if yours are more relevant they have a greater chance of coming up. i.e. handcrafted beaded bracelet will be relevant, diamond bracelet may not be relevant
I'd also recommend you change your "page8.htm" to something more relevant like "bracelets.htm" or even better "handmadebeaded-bracelet.htm" so that your landing pages are relevant when setting them up and you start getting onto the organic search engine results, rather than having to pay.
Good luck.

Thanks for that, but I can't change the title of the pages, don't forget this is only a Mr Site website, and it does that by default, the only way to change the page titles is to do it by ftp, and in doing that, I lose a lot of the shop functions. I know that makes it a pain, but I don't know the first thing about creating websites and even less about putting the shopping cart stuff in to it, this does it all for me.
Some good advice.

I use this, pick you keywords carefully, "Cambridge Chauffeur" instead of "Chauffeur" you7 will need to be more specific.
We use it and can tell where most people come from using our websites own analtical thingy.
We also use sponsored listings but we have no way of telling if it works as we just know that a link came from Google.
We set our budget and we spend about £15 to £70 per month.

It's worth using Google Analytics and setting up some PPC specific filters so that you know exactly what search term users typed to click on your ad. The filters can then quickly show you what negative keywords to add to your account (particularly if you are using dynamic keyword insertion).
