might help someone looking for a new bike. go to the store, try one for size, go home, order it online...get it delivered to the store and they are doing free build as well....
the id5 I drive xcr £1K full sus had had a few good reviews recently winning a mtbr sub £1K full sus test and this makes it £800 and thus a bit of a bargain, the aggressor xcr is £750 down to £600 etc etc...

cause they are, they are bikes for people who want a bike... they are not bikes for people who want to ride
I am not saying GT in general are rubbish ( never had one ) but the bikes that halfords supply are cheap and therefore heavy frame and poorly put together. No one who does serious mountain bike, road racing would buy a bike from halfords...
I am just judging it on my local Halfords, maybe other stores are better ?

So GT make the frames that go to Halfords heavier than the identical ones supplied to other shops? All i was trying to put across was that you would not go to Halfords to buy a new bike if you were looking for a serious bit of kit. The problem with buying a bike is that if you don't get a decent one it will be difficult to ride and heavy to carry, thus making cycling annoying.. but then you don't want to spend money on something you might not enjoy - catch 22 !
Thats what halfords work on ( as i see it ) they give you the idea that you can get a really good bike with full suspension for under £1000 - which you obviously can't
So like i said, if you fancy buying a bike - go to Halfords... you want to ride and challenge yourself - go to a real bike shop ( not to mention help out a small business in the process )
Hmmm I kind of agree , but as said by millions before, it varies from store to store , some have good staff, others don't....
Plus at the end of the day a bike is what you make it....the most fun rideing I ever had was on a £100 apollo mountain bike I got when I was 12 from halfords . I rode it non stop for 4 years day in day out, covering thousands of miles, I loved cycleing. It gets on my wick when people think how much you spend on kit, where you get it from and how trendy your kit and bike is dictates how keen and good cyclist you are.
Plus at the end of the day a bike is what you make it....the most fun rideing I ever had was on a £100 apollo mountain bike I got when I was 12 from halfords . I rode it non stop for 4 years day in day out, covering thousands of miles, I loved cycleing. It gets on my wick when people think how much you spend on kit, where you get it from and how trendy your kit and bike is dictates how keen and good cyclist you are.

Thats not what I am saying, when you are 12 you would ride a bike with bent forks and a slow puncher because you didn't care, you were riding a bike ! If someone handed you the bike you used to have when you were 12 and said, right ride that to work ever day for a year.... I can guarantee you will get very annoyed fast ! However given a good bit of kit and it would be a pleasure... I used to love may Raleigh Activator 2 i got from halfords when i was 12.. the fact that it weighted a ton, was poorly made etc did not matter at all becuase i was a child !

But i now see the easiest way to settle this is a race around the world, i will meet you at Trafalger square tomorrow at noon, the Queen herself will drop the chequered flag
My personal experience of Halfords has been excellent. Gripes me a little that some make sweeping statements that they're bunk, ofcourse personal experience goes a long way and others may not have had such good customer service/well built bikes as me from them. The two chaps I deal with at my local Halfrauds (sorry still can't resist) are very knowlegable and are both avid riders, so I feel confident dealing with them. I got my GT IDrive 5 XCR from them and the chain went to the correct wheel and everything...
