I own a series 2 2+2 auto, just recently a rotational knocking is coming from the rear, I have checked axle oil and rear bearings seem OK. I think the next step is to have the unit out and have it rebuilt, I would like to have a go myself, but does anybody know of someone who does exchange units.

It may be the UJs on the drive shafts going but you need to be more specific on the knock. There are a few people who do replacement units and it depends what parts you want as to who you go to.

The noise stops when I brake, but looking at my history file the unit was last taken out and serviced in 1996

It could be one of lots of different things so it'll be nigh on impossible to diagnose over the internet. UJs will normally knock on acceleration or lift off unless it's got really bad.

Check to see if your rear hub nuts are tight and your hubs/ wheels are in good shape ! If you have the tin covers over the driveshaft U/Js check make sure they are not fouling the outer hubs. Take them off and discard if need be. Check to see if your front prop U/J is in good shape. Noise can travel sometimes giving the effect it is at the rear. It is a pain ,to get to, but worth a look. If that needs overhaul then you would have to take the axle out anyway.

Thanks for the advice, I guess it is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack since it could be a multitude of different things that could be causing the noise. If it matters it doesn't seem as bad when I have a passenger, make of that what you will. But thanks for the pointers, I'll follow them up and see if it makes a difference.

Is that because your passenger talks all the time?
A remember a mate years ago maintained that a failing wheel bearing was a problem with his stereo because the noise when away when he turned the volume up
