Admittadley, I might not find alot of dubstep fans on PH, as alot of people of all ages often think the same (it's rubbish) but it's worth a go!
A true marmite genre.

Depends what sort of Dubstep you're talking about. Like most modern genres, there are lots of pretenders & no filtering system (like what there used to be in the good old days when someone at a proper label had to listen to your music & decide whether it was good enough to release or not). There are producers who consistently put out quality material, Vex'd, Milanese, Pinch, Coki, Loefah, Boxcutter, Toasty & Warlock to name but a few but there's also a LOT of st out there. Been organising Dubstep events for the past 5 or 6 years, in fact, we're holding one in Tokyo (in the Lounge) next Saturday.

I prefer the heavier dubstep with the pulse bass
The more beat-based stuff i can be a bit indifferent to, can you suggest anything? They're tunes you've linked to there

I stand corrected never having heard of Dubstep before I did some research and saw a few of the names that I am aware of in the Dub world. However having listened to the youtube links posted above I now realise that there is quite a difference.
I know what I prefer though

I like a fair amount of it, although some stuff I find a bit boring - maybe if I was in a certain 'state' I'd get it a bit more. I know he's probably the most well known out there, but I tried the Benga 'Diaries' album and after 2/3s of it just turned it off.

For me it's probably like a lot of electronic music, if there is a decent DJ spinning various artists and keeping the atmosphere I'd enjoy it; but just sat at home listening to Benga as I did then not really for me.

The thing I find with Dubstep is when faced with 3 racks of black sleeves with only the artist name and track name on a label on the sleeve, it is a bit difficult to know where to start.

So, I look for names I have got to know, like T++, Bass Clef, Kode 9, Perverlist, Soundboy and others, but don't try much new - I see some artists get rave reviews, I try some stuff, but it doesn't do it for me like Aerial and dare I say it Burial.

Is Dubstep as close to 'Dub' (Scientist, Mad Professor, King Tubby etc) as R&B (st) is to R&B (which bears no discernable musical similarity whatsoever)

basically dubstep involves enough bass to upset your balance if you walk past a speaker in a dubstep club.


pulsing bass, and ketamine seem to be the two main ingredients, which is great if you are about 16-25 but if like me you are in your thirties then you just get mistaken for being a dj by ketamined up girls at these events (its not as good as it sounds, some actually drool).

I'm regularly guest listed at bashout, goatlab etc in bristol as my chums over there are international dubstep dj's, so I've seen the demographic and i've heard the beats needless to say whilst I'm open to all kinds of music I normally retire to the vip/dj area, drink redstripe and wear earplugs at these events!

I'll ignore the underhanded, age related jibe...

Unfortunately, the ketamine thing is not exclusive to Dubstep events, it seems to be the choice of drug for the younger generation. We've pulled so many casualties out of our Hardcore, Gabba, Hard/Acid Techno events it's not even funny. Actually Hard/Acid Techno seems to be the worst, something which defies belief IMO. The only place it doesn't interfere so much is at the Jungle/Breakcore events (hey, Junglists have more fun). IME there's usually just as much coke/E/weed at Dubstep parties as anything else. Not that I condone any of this you understand.

OK thanks for the pointing that out - those two are more my thing than some of the more 'electronic/ drum & bass' (for want of a better description) examples...

Apart from mostly liking 80's era of dub - I do like some of Tayo's mixes - would only have listened to them because he's a mate though... I like these:
