{{What would cause my driver's door to click open on the motorway at 70 mph?

It does this quite regualry, but not that often. Maybe once in a 200 mile trip. This has only ever happened going at steady speed on a motorway, never happened driving round town or going slow. But not sure if this is related.

The door, luckily , doesn't open completely. The first hint is a rush of air as the driver's window drops 5 inches then the door clicks open to the first latch. It doesn't open completely. In fact, because it is on the first latch you cannot pull it shut so it just sits there, half cocked, rattling away while you find the first chance to pull over, stop, open the door completely and then shut it again. Needless to say the window doesn't automatically raise then as the clever clever electronics recognises there has been a glitch, the orange (or sometimes red) light flashes round the interior door release button and you have to press the window raising button to shut the window the last 5 inches.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I have replaced the door ECU and that has had no effect (actually I swapped it over for one that has never exhibited this problem) so I am fairly sure the ECU is not the problem.}}

I posted the above on the TVRCC Website and someone replied that it could be door alignment that's the issue.

Does anyone have experience of this? And any advice on how to re-align the door. Since the dooe opens and closes fine with no problems is this actually aignment of the microswitch in the catch rather than teh door itself?

Regards
Phil.

Phil.

I had that twice as well.

That the window opens, before the door pops open is a indication for an electrical related problem, as if you were pushing the release button.
Do you have an early MK1 car? If so, check the buttons for the electric windows. You can push them. I was told that on early cars this was used as the door opener. So if you hit that with your knee by accident when it is still wired, the door could open.

Though that was not the reason on my car, which i did not find out yet.

Check the manual door release is functioning as it should. If it is not pushed fully back (as closed)then the door latch will not fully engaged and it can open with vibration. It may also be the case the mechanism is sticking/broken (regardless of the position of the handle) you need to remove the lock plate to check this.

This happened on my Tam but for me it was just a case of the handle not being fully retracted. Another Tuscan owner I pointed this out to found the mechanism was sticking.

Remember the drivers side has an additional manual door release handle....

On my early Mk 1, if I pressed the center console, in the general area of the drivers door switch, the window would go down and on occasion the door would open.
I found that, with my driving position, my knee would press against the console.
It was due to the switch wires being pressed together and shorting out.
Got the wiring tidied up at the next service.

I think it maybe your door ECU. This happened to me and ended up having to have the door ECU reconditioned.

Many thanks for the replies guys.

It's a late Mk 2. Tuscan S Convertible 2006.
It isn't caused by accidentally touching any interior door buttons. The door-opening dial is on the centre console ahead of the gear knob. Doors lock once moving and if you try turning the interior door release dial as you drive nothing happens.

The ECU has been swapped for the one on the passenger side and still the driver's door does this occasional springing open. The passenger door has never done this.

The manual door release is fully retracted.

I will have a look at the loor latch mechanism (it's different from the picture above) to check if anything is obviously wrong there.

Anyone now how you actually know when the latch mechanism is correctly aligned?

Phil.
