Having had my current Dyson for 6-7 years, it has, like a recently married bride, stopped sucking (and it smells a bit, but I appreciate that not all new brides smell)

Before I go and spend my hard-earned on another Dyson I thought I would consult PH to see if anyone can put up a good case for another manufacturer of bagless upright vacums?

Does it have to be bagless? My Missus swears by these ( runs a domestic cleaning business)

Meile.

Costly, but worth it as they have a pretty good guarantee.

The head stopped rotating properly so my missus phoned up and they instantly sent a replacement, free of charge.

FUBAR - If its motor is still working, it sounds like it just needs taking apart and cleaning.

These respond very well to a really good clean. Check the air flow around all the tubes as on the upright cleaners especially, the clear plastic tubing can split.

Good luck.

Edited to add : Beaten to it....

You can wash the filters, dry and re-install.

Another vote for Meile - very quiet and very powerful.

When you absoultely, positively have to remove every last trace of sand (and some switches from the dashboard) accept no substitute!

Wolf and Ray, its actually still sucking (I was just after some comedy value) but it is making an awful sound and there is a horrid burning smell everytime it runs, so Im guessing it is motor related?

And anyway, Im bored of it now, and what with my renowned lack of DIY/mechanical skills, I thought it was a good excuse to buy a new one smile

Dyson DC15 (tha ball). Handles brilliantly and sucks like a 'wanabe wag' on a 1st date with Ronaldo.

Fubes, even with your lack of DIY skills, the Dyson is really easy to pull apart.

Press all the grey bits and it will fall apart, you can then clean it up.

I even washed the 'bagless bit' with a hose recently. Clean the filter in warm water, cut all the hair/string off the spinny bit and it'll be like new, trust me!

I recommend a Labrador. They come in three nice colours and will hoover up all food stuffs you drop - sometimes even before they have hit the floor.

If you open the bag-box thing there is a grid of 2mm holes in the centre where the vacuum is created. Over time these get blocked, you just need to rub the lint out of it.

I believe that Dyson service centres do a complete service for £60 and that includes a new motor brush assembly and filters, basically making your machine new again.

Meile, had ours 12 years, thought it had died a few weeks ago but a new bag and clean of filters brought it bag as good as new.

We have a Dyson and an Electrolux - the Electrolux is *much* better. http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/vacuum-cleaner...
