Hi folks,

I'm currently torn between a second hand Tuscan and a new Mazda RX8. Now I know that the Tuscan beats the Mazda for looks, performance, fun, styling, in fact pretty much everything, but I really am useless when it comes to car maintainance. I currently drive an MX5, which is great, but as I'm nearing 80k miles, it is time for a change. I've heard stories that a Tuscan would cost thousands per service and need servicing every 3000 miles (which would be about 4 times a year for me), is there any truth in this?

How much generally are people paying for services and maintainance. Other than topping up the oil is there much else you need to do to keep the beast happy?

I'd also love to know who you Tuscan owners have your insurance with and how much that is setting you back?

Any help at all would be gratefully received as I need to make up my mind!

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

As Graham says, service intervals are every 6000 miles or 12 months (whichever is sooner), but won't set you back thousands. My car was purchased new earlier this year, but I have listed all costs on my profile, so take a look here for some idea of what it might cost you.

Insurance obviously varies depending on age/location etc..., but I had good quotes from Tesco, Privilege and Sunninghill (who I went with). There are several threads on here concerning insurance, so if you do a search you'll hopefully get a good idea of places to try.

As for day-to-day maintenance, you may need to top the oil up sometimes, but other than normal water/oil/tyre pressure checks, I've not had to do anything to mine in the 7000 miles that I've driven already.

Hope this helps.

Ed, your Tuscan is simply stunning. Bitch to keep clean I would guess but absolutely stunning.

Thanks!

It's actually not too bad to keep clean now, although that is after I gave it a coating of Zymol which took a full day to apply (1st clean, deep clean, dry then wax) and I couldn't lift my arms for about 3 days afterwards!

Worth it though, as the dirt just washes off really easily now.

Thanks for that. Interesting to see that you get 22mpg; I thought it would be quite a bit lower. I think the RX8 only manages 25 mpg and that only has a 1.3L engine! (Although it is a rotary and so a little different).

The profile was great Ed, very useful. Do any other members have profiles with as much info? I would find it really useful.

Good news about the 6k servicing, I think I can live with that. The model I am looking at has done 18k and is a 2000 model. Is there anything I should be wary of?
