That's hardtails. Too much pressure in the rear tyre doesn't help. Else, just get out of the saddle and stay nice 'n' loose: let the bike take the hits and move around...

Tyre pressures may well be your problem, as suggested above. If that doesn't sort it, you could try slightly larger volume tyres which will give more cushioning.

Yes, it is hardtails. Trouble with adjusting the tyre pressures is too hard and you get a firmer ride, too soft and you run the risk of pinch flats, personally I run 32ish PSi.

The trick is to identify potential rough terrain in front of you and take your weight with your legs, not your bum. This doesn't necessarily mean you need to stand up, just lift your arse an inch off the saddle and let the bike move underneath you, you'll find you're quicker over the rough stuff and more comfortable at the same time.

Should have gone full sus!!

But you didn't so you've got to use your legs at the shocks, just lifting your butt off the seat without moving your body weight forward!

Fancy meeting up for a ride some time Diz?

I was out for a couple of hours this evening, and will be out again on Thursday evening - something I'm trying to do every week. I usually ride on either Holmbury or Leith hills - 100% off road, and lots of nice, swoopy single track.

Needless to say, you'll nuke me on fitness levels, but I can keep up enough of a pace that you won't get too bored hanging around waiting! hehe

Ride for a couple of hours, then grab a drink and a sandwich in a pub?

OK. I'll drop you an email on Monday once I know I'll be out. Shouldn't be a problem so long as the kids haven't been playing up too much!

Needless to say, if anyone else can get to the Dorking area and wants to join us, just shout.

Aluminium frame can give a harsh ride too. Steel, scandium and titanium flex much more forgivingly.

Diz - are they pinch flats or holes?

> if holes when you get a puncture are you locating the hole in the tube and then finding (and removing) the cause from the tyre?
> regardless of cause what PSI are you running with and a higher PSI will reduce punctures!!

ALso a "better bike" won't reduce punctures... better tyres or slimed tubes might!

Diz,

If you're still not getting on with the ride, try one of these:

I've got one, and find it really takes the edge off bumps...

At the very least, get a spare tube. That's only a fiver, and if you're out riding with us, we'll have pumps and tyre irons.

There's nothing worse than having to drop out before the fun stuff because you've got a flat tyre, as Swerni can attest to, even if in his case it was the tyre that went, not the tube.

Are you riding this evening? If so, let me know before lunchtime, and I'll get a tube for you.

Just my opinion, but some of the cheaper suspension forks are not really that good. I've spoken to a few people who say the bog-standard Suntour forks are tempramental at best and at worst have a tendency to 'stick'.

I also know a lot of guys who ride pretty long and hard on hardtails without issue - admittedly some are pricier bikes, like Orange and Cotic - but nontheless, a hardtail shouldn't be such an inherent challenge.

i love my hardtail, i could ride it all day to be fair and as mentioned ride out of the seat on rough trail, which can make u slower than the full sus guys but hey ho biggrin

have you thought of using DH tubes ? i ride my bike quite hard with loads of drops and ive never had a puncture yet.

by the way the bike is an orange crush
