ignition timing for pre serp Griff 500
Discussion
Can anyone tell me the ignition timing for a pre serp Griff 500 engine. I've done a quick search and found for a Chim 4.0 engine its around 28 @ 4000 rpm but I can find the value for a 500 engine. I'm running on Optimax fuel if this has any difference to the timing required.
Can you please also tell me how I can tell if the engine is pinking? Does it cause a specific engine noise or can I tell by other means?

onny,
28 sounds about right, had mine set to 28 but caused it to pink, some engines are happy at that setting some are not, just needed retarding a fraction for me.
Pinking is fairly easy to spot/hear. It's quite a metalic rattle and for each engine and that particualr ingnition setting it should occur at roughly the same revs each time.
Hope of some help.

depends on dizzy!!?
mines pre serp and runs 29 degrees for max power (mark adams). 28 is fine - mine ran fine - advancing timing will increase power - up to 32 degrees!! but mine pinked like hell there.
pinking as stated is a metalic clatter under HEAVY load. 50mph 4th gear, if it rattles when you floor it...its probably out.
cheers
PS it has been known for the timing marks to be wrong
