I think you need very little, best to check the MOT book, see what they test and keep those things.... but from experience on road legal track cars you do need the following:

Windscreen Washers
Wipers
A blower for the screen

Otherwise as soon as it rains you are fked.

ETA: RE the blower I usually remove most bits and block oof the outlets but leave some pipes pointing to the screen to de-mist.

You don't need a bumper or high beam headlights apparently though, this is mine:

Rip out the blower unit and buy one of these? http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/electric-demist-heater-...

Doesn't require a water feed so you can save a fair bit of weight (though you may need 2 for a 3 series windscreen?).

Don't need a blower but do need wipers and washers for the MOT.

I've got mine in tomorrow for it's first MOT since it's been stripped:

That looks bloody peachy, I may get a token one for the drivers side. Thank a lot mate.

The ring shed is looking good sniff. Good luck with the MOT

When the time comes to get a new screen for mine I'll get one of the heated motorsport ones, they're a bit thinner and lighter than the standard ones but a bit more fragile. They cost about £200 plus fitting.

Passed my MOT first time this morning! Just an advisory on a rear bush but I plan to take that all apart and polybush it later in the year anyway. Just want to get out and drive the thing for now!

Horn is necessary for the MOT.
