I'd say look when the 750 motor club ( www.750mc.co.uk )is up your way. Proper tracks, about 8 different kinds of car, you can have a good wander around the paddock and have a chat with the racers, maybe even help them out with their race prep!
I think it's about £12. best to check on their website.
Or you could look at local classic racing.

How cheap is cheap?

Even Mx5 series etc you are looking around 8K including the car.

Motorsport is not cheap

I have tried for a few years to get enough cash but it just is not happening.

www.tvrchampionship.co.uk. covers most budgets... a race ready(minus engine) class C tasmin just went for under 2 grand.. and tuscans seem to go from 18k-28k

Worth going to Oulton Park on 25th July for the MSVR package, which includes great racing from the Elise Trophy and GT Cup

It's as bad as saying 'which sport should I do with a ball, there are so many different forms of motorsport we could do with knowing a budget and whether you're into racing, rallying, sprinting etc first!

Northern Sports and Saloon car Championship.

Mostly at Croft, but also Cadwell Park, Knockhill and Oulton Park.

Very very friendly and some awesome cars in the paddock you can get up close to. (700bhp focus and Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera spring to mind).

Cadwell this weekend.

check out croft's website to see whats on and when, have some good club level stuff on there. also harewood for hill climbs is a brilliant day out.

As a spectator then, as noted above, 750MC meets are great for variety and ease of access to cars and drivers as are BRMCC events. Formula Palmer Audi is usually around a tenner and can be good racing - not been this year so don't know what the support races are like.

Cheapest to spectate is bound to be Karting as it is usually free.

Lots of close racing and plenty of overtaking.
