After a spate of burglaries in our street (apparently cops know who they are, but are gathering evidence!) it's time to wise up and put some security on the house. The burglaries include night time incursions with residents asleep, losing their cars.

It's only a small pad (kitchen diner and lounge downstairs only) - so nothing elaborate needed. We have 2 cats which are locked away downstairs, so I'm not sure if IR would work? We also have new double glazing just fitted. The front door is pretty damn secure (£1000 door which apparently TVP have trouble breaking down when raiding drug-dens).

I'm quite taken by wireless cameras, and have a permanent internet-connected laptop in the house - so can access them.

Any ideas or recommendations? I think we can chuck £500 or so at this.

Thanks smile

Wireless alarms are pretty good, use door sensors and fit but don't syncronise the PIRs (IYSWIM) so the scrotes can see then but the cats don't set them off.

Or get the zones set up such that the PIRs are switchable a lot of alarms allow a night, a day and a full set.

Pro install companies wont use wireless alarms, generally speaking.

Texecom Premier and Panasonic IP cameras is a popular combo.

I know of quite a few pro alarm companies that will install wireless, in my area alone there are 3 Nacoss installers that will do it, but they are not cheap and definately not for £500.

Not far off if you're going to DIY it.

If a company uses something like this then you should get it within budget.

The system has now been updated which only professionals can buy. But this is what we used to use for a budget wireless system. All pre programmed straight out of the box, but if your not confident, and programming can get a little complicated, get a professional to fit. If fitted professionally you should also get a certificate of approval from their affiliating body, for your insurance company.

Don't buy it then ask a professional to fit it though, companies will have a preference and won't normally fit a customers own bought system, unless your very lucky.

Depending on what system is fitted, wireless can be just as good as a hard wired system, although batteries will need changing every 2-4 years.

Edited to say :- As in everything, price will generally reflect quality......generally wink

You can buy sensors that will not be set off by small animals but are by humans - we've had them for years and have yet to have them triggered by the moggies.
