Buying Impreza Wagon - What to look for?

I am looking to change the misses Focus to something a little bigger to lug around our GSD's (dam puppies get big quick!), also will be used for the odd trip to the ring and le man. She'll be having my MR2 Roadster, and i'll be having the new car) I am thinking of getting an Impreza Wagon, on an 03 or 04 plate. I am not after anything with huge power although i do want something with a turbo. I've been looking around the net for a buyers guide of things to look for etc, but not really come up with anything.
I was wondering if anyone here had any tips on what to look for when buying these cars. With a light right foot, how economical can they be (although I am not buying it for economy!). What sort of price are services etc? Is the PPP worth the extra if I see a car with one?
