Potentially, why not?

Ferrari have had the 365GT4 2+2/412 in their time and Ferruccio had his outlandish Espada.

I could see the appeal enormously although hopefully the styling would be something more along the lines of a triumph than, er, question mark.

Looking like a 911 may be a faux pas too far...

Seems to fit in with the current regime and they a have
a decent V8 Turbo lump to use....looking at the style-ised images, usual stuff wheels are optimal size to fill the arches and shutlines are perfect etc...to me it looks a bit blando, like a '70s drawing of what would come next.
The 928 was an amazing step forward in styling, imagine how a style-ised drawing of that car would look now?...possibly better...

Is this the super saloon they were talking about or something different again?

Pics?

How bland does it look? Even if it is a computer generated image of the car.

Even more of a jelly mould than the 996 shaped 911.

What happened to style? What happened to wheel arches (even subtle ones)?

Come on Porsche, you have created the ugliest car in the world with the Cayenne, now show us you CAN design a stunning looking sports car. (even a 4 seater).

I have no problem with the idea of this car and a new 928 would be a good thing but porsche seem to be struggling to work within their brand "identity".

Like the Cayenne they seem to be attempting to use signature porsche styling cues on an unsuitable platform. Porsche make sportscars and trying to graft sportcar front ends onto saloons and 4X4`s is never going to work. The original 928 IMHO was a genuinely novel step forward so why don`t porsche have the confidence to break new ground?

If these pictures are representative we`ll have another kitsch monster that could have come from korea!

new 928 - yes please! The original still makes you turn your head 28 years on, my favourite is still the GTS - one seriously good looking lump of metal.

this version though - no thanks, looks like a stretched Audi TT...

make a proper looking thing, thats low, swoopy, curvy even. Not some slab slided monstrosity...

Absolutely superb...exactly what someone who wants to trade up from an M5 or E55 without being forced into a boring S class or odd looking 7 might want....its a brillant idea and well done porsche (perhaps they will be able to dump the Cayanne if it does well!!) And also...doesnt the new Boxster Coupe look absolutely gorgeous

Artist impression though, so could look entirely different if it ever actually appears in the metal.

I can't believe I'm going to say it, but I though the Boxter Coupe didn't look bad either.

I'm off for a lie down

Give your head a shake.

At least BMW had the b.lls to TRY something different.

The new proposed Boxster is a step in the right direction, the new shaped 911 due next year is an improvement. But please Porsche do us a favour, give us some STYLE.

Ian.

I actually really like the styling of the 7, 5 and Z4 but appear to be in the minority..plus I am too young to buy a 7...I would, however, consider trading up from my 996 to this new car.

I can't quite see why they're referring to it as 'the new 928'? This is quite clearly 'the new 989'. They may as well call it an on-road Cayenne!

The 928 was a GT 2dr Coupe. The back seats were for short trips only, and they were just as likely to be used in the folded down position to increase boot space, as to carry passengers. The only similarity as far as I can see, is that it is supposed to slot in at the top end of the Porsche range in terms of price and luxury.

While the 928 is my favourite Porsche, it was never a great sales success let's face it. The reason it was killed off, was that the 911 had evolved into something that was a direct competitor, though offering a different soundtrack and handling. The E2 will be a very different proposition, offering even more practicality. And in V6 form it will probably be a best seller.

As for the looks of this new E2, I prefer the aborted 989.

Exactly what I thought but isn't it a bit insulting from Autocar to call this saloon anything like a 'new 928', for the 928 has never been any dull 'sports saloon' of any sort ?
Not sure of the point of refering to the past with that name 'new 928', let's just let Porsche build something ALL new and look at the future, for a change ...

Are Porsche out of their mind? I happen to have a 928 as a daily driver and cannot find any similarities with that new piece of cr*p. Whilst the original 928 still looks stunnig today I seriously doubt that the so called Porsche soapbar would look that good in 28 years. Whilst the original 928 had a trans-axle layout for optimum (50/50) weight distribution and handling, the soapbar will have conventional lay-out. I can go on and on...Disgusting What next - a 911 diesel estate? I guess making tracktors and farm machinery has also been penned in the Porsche business development plan...

The only flipside is that it will raise the profile of the original 928 and make more people aware of how good this often overlooked Porsche still is...

I wouldn't take those pictures too seriously - the article says its Autocar's own artists impression based on a conversation with an unnamed Porsche insider.

Imagine it - "yeah, it'll be a bit like a 911 only longer, and with four doors, and a V8 engine in the front, and a room in the back for two sets of golf clubs" and from that we get artists impressions done by some frustrated genius who's just been on a PhotoShop course.

You only have to look at the slope of the bonnet line to wonder how the hell they're going to fit a V8 engine under there, even if it is set back. I bet the end product looks nothing like their pictures, either in overall shape or the details.

Personally I think it is pretty exciting - they reckon the top model is going to have 500bhp+ and torque to match, plus dynamics like only Porsche can do. Isn't this what everyone who knocks the Cayenne says they should have done? Now we're getting it!

I'll reserve judgement on the looks for now, but with a launch date of 2007, that should be plenty of time to get saving!

Here's my opinion..........

"it sucks"

"it's just further dillution of the brand"

"it's another POS inspired from the accounting department"

Tell me "why the world needs a 4-door Porsche"??

Actually, none of us really want to step tooo far back into Porsche history, for fear we'll see a photo of our mentor standing there with Adolf Hitler.

That tractor wasn't one of their bigger money making schemes, ha ha. An air cooled diesel, hmmmmmm. Perhaps a good working machine, eh, but hardly "super".
