Purely hypothetical question at the moment. But is it possible to trasnplant an e39 M5 engine into an E34 525i? It always been something I've wanted to do but imagine it would cost a fortune considering I have no mechanical knowledge myslef. I know some may say that its easier to just get an E39 M5 but the E34 appeals to me more.

Anyone know of sucha conversion already done in the UK?

From a financial point of view it'd be absolutely pointless, even if at all possible you'd spend many thousands more than you would buying a decen E39 M5, but it sounds like a fun idea if you have deep pockets!

True, I think it will probably always remain a pipe dream. Its something I think I would do if I had my own work shop and a the skill to do most of the work my self.

It has been done a number of times, and people even remove E39 M5 engines and replace the lump in a TVR. Not sure on an E34 you would get any financial return but hey what a drive.

wouldnt it be easier to start with a e34 530-540 as if i remember correctly the e39 m5 block comes from the 4.4 v8, thus giving a easier starting point.

How about an E39 M5 engine into a E46 330 Touring?

Yes it's been done a few times have a search on M5board.com for details.
I was chatting with a mechanic at my local garage a while ago when I took my old E34 M5 in for a MOT and it turns out he was involved in such a conversion.
It was an absolute nightmare to do, one of the biggest headaches was interfacing all the electronics. He definitely didn't recommend it.

€105,000 if my sketchy German serves. eek

It does seem to be well engineered and fairly stealthy.
